OpenAI Drops ChatGPT Text Limits for Free Accounts in GPT-5.6 Upgrade

Free and Go account users gain unlimited text chats as OpenAI rolls out GPT-5.6 models and reduces inference constraints.

OpenAI is removing usage rate limits on text-only prompts for Free and Go ChatGPT accounts starting next week, a move that reflects significant cost reductions in processing artificial intelligence queries.

As part of the update, the artificial intelligence company is deploying GPT-5.6 Luna—the smallest variant in its new GPT-5.6 family—as the standard default model for free users this week. The system replaces GPT-5.5 Instant, which had served as the default model for non-paying users since May.

While text interactions will become unrestricted, OpenAI confirmed it will maintain separate rate limits on resource-intensive features. File attachments, image analysis, AI image generation, and ChatGPT’s updated voice mode will continue to carry strict cap enforcement for Free and Go tier accounts.

Free and Go users will also gain access to a new “Think” feature via a dedicated interface button. The option prompts GPT-5.6 Luna to allocate additional computational time to construct responses. For purely text-based prompts, the extended processing feature will operate without volume caps, though combining it with file uploads or image tools will count toward usage limits.

Subscribers to paid Plus and Pro tiers are receiving upgrades to OpenAI’s flagship model, GPT-5.6 Sol. The company updated the model to optimize everyday conversations, aiming for more focused answers, dynamic detail adjustments based on context, reduced formatting bloat, and active factual corrections when simple agreement is unhelpful. Paid users also gain a new control slider—resembling the effort menu found in competing platform Anthropic Claude—to manually adjust the amount of processing time ChatGPT applies to an answer.

Eliminating rate limits on text messaging marks a structural shift for OpenAI, whose operating margins are tightly bound to inference costs—the expense incurred whenever an AI model processes input and generates output. Recent industry data points to notable efficiency gains across AI infrastructure, enabling providers to support heavier compute loads at lower costs per prompt.

“This is a concrete step toward more abundant intelligence: making our latest models more widely available, improving the usefulness and reliability of the answers people get, and letting free users keep text chats going without a rate limit,” OpenAI said in a statement. “Access shapes opportunity, and this update gives more people the ability to keep asking, develop an idea, and get help when they need it.”
