A late-night shooting in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood has left eight people injured, including four children as young as six, highlighting a persistent surge in multi-victim gun violence across New York City.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported that officers responded to the 2900 block of West 31st Street at approximately 10:37 p.m. Saturday following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a scene with victims ranging from young adolescents to adults in their late thirties.
Among those wounded were four boys, aged 6 to 14. According to police statements, the adult victims include two men and two women, aged 21 to 37. While seven of the victims are currently listed in stable condition at local hospitals, a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
This incident occurs amid a broader national discussion on the impact of firearms on youth. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, firearm-related injuries have become a leading cause of death and injury for children and adolescents in the United States.
NYPD investigators recovered a single firearm at the scene, though no suspects have been taken into custody. The motive for the shooting remains unclear as detectives continue to process evidence from the West 31st Street location.
The shooting took place in a residential pocket of Coney Island, a district that has historically seen fluctuating crime rates despite increased police presence in high-traffic entertainment areas.
