Apple Prepares 7-Inch Smart Home Hub with Facial Recognition and Siri AI

Apple is preparing to expand its hardware presence in the smart home market with a dedicated AI-powered desktop hub, entering direct competition with existing displays from Amazon and Google.
According to details reported by Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, the device is near completion and scheduled to launch between late this year and early 2027. Its release will follow expected autumn hardware updates for both the Apple TV and HomePod mini.
The upcoming smart home hub features a 7-inch display operating on software built from tvOS. Rather than copying the television-oriented interface, the device blends visual design elements from iOS and watchOS to suit close-range desktop and wall-mounted usage.
A standout technical capability is real-time screen adaptation powered by facial recognition. The device identifies specific family members looking at the screen and calculates their physical distance, dynamically resizing text and interface elements so content remains readable as users move closer or further away.
Apple has designed two physical variations for the hardware. One option features a magnetic mounting mechanism meant for installation on walls, while the second integrates the screen into a curved base that resembles a truncated HomePod speaker.
The central hub is intended to manage networked home appliances, controlling devices such as connected thermostats, automated window blinds, lighting, smart locks, and ambient speakers. It also integrates with existing Apple hardware to support local features such as household intercom messaging, FaceTime calls, interactive widgets, and app access.
Apple initially established its smart home foundation with the launch of HomeKit in 2014, but previously relied on third-party displays to anchor its control platform while competing tech giants captured market share with dedicated hardware like the Amazon Echo Show and Google Nest Hub.
The display heavily integrates Siri AI to manage device controls and deliver personalized contextual recommendations based on individual user profiles and habits.
While official pricing details have not been released, internal deployment plans suggest Apple intends for users to install multiple hubs in different rooms across the house.
