Llocnou de la Corona: Spain’s Smallest Municipality, Just Minutes from Valencia
A cartographic review in 2022 confirmed Llocnou de la Corona, near Valencia, as the nation's tiniest town, boasting a unique independent character.

Spain boasts numerous towns renowned for their unique characteristics, from stunning landscapes to population figures. Among these, certain areas stand out as particularly intriguing, even if a visit might be brief. One such place is Llocnou de la Corona, recognized as the smallest municipality in all of Spain, located just 20 minutes from the heart of Valencia.
Situated in the l’Horta Sud region, Llocnou de la Corona claimed this title in 2022, taking the position from Emperador. The shift occurred after a cartographic review by the Instituto Cartográfico de Valencia (ICV) that same year. This review led to a readjustment of municipal boundaries, leaving Llocnou de la Corona with a surface area of 0.0128 km2, compared to Emperador’s 0.0288 km2.
The municipality is entirely surrounded by Alfafar and, despite its proximity to Valencia city, has maintained its independent character since its 17th-century founding. It has even retained its own local government since Spain’s democratic Transition.
Its identity as an independent town is a source of pride for its residents. However, due to its diminutive size—barely larger than a football field, measuring 130 meters wide and 250 meters long—most public and administrative services are managed in conjunction with the neighboring municipality of Sedaví.
What to Do in Llocnou de la Corona
Given its small scale, Llocnou de la Corona is not a prominent tourist destination. Its charm lies instead in its tranquility and the distinct village character it maintains, feeling much like a neighborhood within a larger city. The primary economic activities in the area are its furniture stores and car workshops.
