Viral Refrigerator Cooling Hack Causes Surge in Destroyed Smartphones Across Europe

European smartphone repair centers are reporting a steep surge in liquid and structural hardware damage caused by consumers placing hot devices into refrigerators—a dangerous cooling attempt popularized across social media platforms during summer heatwaves.

Although modern flagship smartphones carry IP67 or IP68 water-resistance ratings designed to block liquid ingress, those rubber gaskets and adhesives only protect against external fluids. When an overheating phone enters a cold refrigerator, the warm air sealed inside the chassis rapidly cools below its dew point, forcing internal air moisture to condense directly onto sensitive printed circuit boards, display connectors, and microchips.

Abrupt cooling also triggers severe thermal shock. Leading manufacturers like Apple and Samsung build mobile hardware to operate within an ambient temperature window of 0° to 35° Celsius (32° to 95° Fahrenheit). Sudden exposure to fridge or freezer environments destabilizes lithium-ion battery voltage, accelerates permanent capacity loss, and risks fracturing display glass due to conflicting thermal contraction rates between metal and glass components.

Modern iOS and Android operating systems already incorporate automated thermal safety triggers, throttling CPU performance or halting display operations before components hit critical heat thresholds. Hardware specialists advise that users facing high-temperature alerts should strip off heat-trapping TPU or leather cases, activate power-saving modes, halt video streaming and gaming, use MagSafe external cooling fans or ventilated mesh cases, or power down the device completely in a shaded area.
