Smartphone Platform Migration Slows as Apple Secures 87% Repeat Buyer Rate
New data shows 87% of iPhone buyers are repeat customers as ecosystem lock-in hardens.
The global smartphone market has reached a state of deep consolidation, with user migration between the two dominant operating systems slowing to a crawl. According to the latest data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), Apple has successfully fortified its ecosystem, with 87% of customers purchasing a new iPhone in the quarter ending March 2026 upgrading from a previous iOS device.
This figure represents a steady climb from 84% in 2025 and 85% in 2024, signaling that the vast majority of mobile consumers have firmly chosen their side in the platform wars. Conversely, the rate of Android users defecting to Apple has dipped slightly. Only 12% of new iPhone buyers during the first quarter of 2026 migrated from an Android device, down from 14% in the previous year and 13% in 2024. Meanwhile, individuals transitioning from feature phones or alternative operating systems accounted for a mere 1%, down from 2% in the preceding two years.
These dynamics highlight the immense power of ecosystem lock-in, a phenomenon that both Apple and Google have spent over a decade cultivating. While both tech giants have historically released migration apps on rival storefronts to ease the transition, consumers are increasingly staying put.
A separate study conducted by the trade-in site SellCell, which surveyed more than 5,000 smartphone users in the United States, reinforces this trend of lopsided brand dedication. The survey revealed that Apple’s brand loyalty rate reached an unprecedented 96.4% in 2026, up from 90.5% in 2019. Android loyalty, while still robust, trailed behind at 86.4%. Notably, the SellCell data indicated that Android users were approximately four times more likely to switch to iOS than iPhone users were to migrate to Google’s platform.
This persistent divide remains despite recent industry shifts designed to improve cross-platform communication. For years, the lack of seamless messaging between iOS and Android was cited as a major pain point for users, particularly in the US market where iMessage dominates. Under regulatory and industry pressure, Apple recently adopted RCS messaging, bringing features like end-to-end encryption, high-resolution media sharing, and typing indicators to cross-platform chats. However, this interoperability upgrade appears to have had negligible impact on consumer loyalty, suggesting that hardware preferences and broader software ecosystems run deeper than messaging features alone.
At the same time, the unique selling points of each operating system are undergoing shifts. Android has traditionally appealed to users seeking an open ecosystem, notably through its support for sideloading—the practice of installing applications from third-party sources outside the official Google Play Store. This flexibility has been a key differentiator against Apple’s highly controlled “walled garden.” However, Google is preparing to restrict sideloading capabilities, a move that could diminish one of Android’s primary appeals for power users.
The next major battleground for user retention lies in generative artificial intelligence. Google has aggressively integrated its Google Gemini assistant directly into the Android core. This integration powers advanced automation features, including dictation, auto-scheduling, form auto-completion, and autonomous web browsing.
Apple is preparing its counteroffensive. The company plans to introduce comparable AI capabilities to Siri with the release of iOS 27 this fall. The upcoming update is expected to bring sophisticated features such as visual descriptions, AI-driven web searches, and automated document drafting, as Apple seeks to ensure its virtual assistant remains competitive in the rapidly accelerating AI race.
