Apple Wallet in iOS 27 Adds Custom Pass Generation for Static QR Codes
Native utility allows users to digitize paper tickets and static barcodes for lock-screen access.
Apple is expanding the capabilities of its native Wallet application in iOS 27 by enabling users to manually generate custom digital passes, addressing a long-standing functional gap for tickets and cards that lack native developer integration. The feature allows iPhone owners to convert physical paper passes, web receipts, or digital documents containing static QR codes into lock-screen accessible items.
The process is integrated directly into the standard Wallet interface. Upon accessing the addition control in the application, users can select a custom pass option to scan physical media using the camera or configure entry fields manually from existing image files. The creation workflow includes options for customizing pass titles, event schedules, background colors, thematic emojis, and secondary text details.
The functionality is restricted to fixed visual credentials. The utility only operates with static barcodes and fixed QR code formats, meaning it cannot process dynamic, refreshing security tokens used by major live-event distributors to prevent secondary ticket market fraud. As a result, high-security event passes using rotating token algorithms remain incompatible, while standard cinema tickets, transit vouchers, and local event passes can be integrated into the system.
Originally introduced as Passbook in 2012 before being rebranded alongside Apple Pay in 2015, the Apple Wallet architecture historically depended on distribution of signed .pkpass files generated by merchants. This model created friction whenever issuers distributed standard PDF attachments or paper receipts, requiring users to locate files manually at gate checks or entrance queues.
The addition aligns Apple with broader market shifts in mobile credential management. Competing mobile platforms, including Google Wallet, have similarly introduced photo scanning tools to extract data from physical tickets, reflecting an industry effort to digitize legacy physical credentials into unified mobile wallets.
