French Prosecutors Launch Murder Investigation After Five Infant Remains Discovered in Cardboard Boxes

French prosecutors have opened a criminal murder investigation in the southern town of Orange after a man uncovered the remains of five infants hidden inside cardboard boxes at his family home.

The discovery occurred shortly after the man’s 32-year-old partner gave birth to a baby boy at home without medical intervention. Following a domestic confrontation regarding the sealed boxes, the woman complained of acute abdominal pain and was admitted to a local hospital. Left behind at the home, her partner inspected the containers and discovered decomposing remains and human bones before notifying law enforcement through hospital staff.

Preliminary assessments conducted by a forensic pathologist established that the remains belong to five newborns. Four of the boxes contained skeletal remains, while the fifth held a heavily decomposed body. French prosecutors ordered autopsies, comprehensive post-mortem examinations, and forensic laboratory anthropological analysis to establish the timeline and precise causes of death.

The 32-year-old husband told investigators he was entirely unaware of any previous pregnancies. Although he reported suspecting a recent pregnancy at a late stage despite his partner’s repeated denials, he maintained he had no knowledge of past births.

In French judicial precedent, multi-infant neonaticide investigations often involve forensic psychiatric evaluations centered on pregnancy denial, a recognized medical phenomenon where gestations are either unconsciously unacknowledged or actively concealed. Under Article 221-4 of the French Penal Code, the murder of a minor under the age of 15 carries potential life imprisonment, though court proceedings typically examine potential psychological impairment during delivery.

The mother remained hospitalized on Tuesday and had not yet been interviewed by investigating officers.

The public prosecutor’s office mobilized child welfare services to evaluate the physical and psychological well-being of the couple’s two existing children, aged eight and nine. Authorities also issued a provisional placement order for the newborn infant, pending a formal custody ruling by a juvenile court judge.

Local resident Florent Jean described the family as unremarkable and friendly, noting that the father was employed while the mother managed the home.
