Google Corrects AI Search Tool After It Promoted Vandalism of Surveillance Cameras

Google has updated its search engine’s artificial intelligence feature after it generated false responses claiming that municipal license plate surveillance cameras contained hundreds of dollars in scrap gold and copper, effectively promoting the vandalism of law enforcement equipment.

The automated summary, produced by Google’s AI Overviews, cited online memes and unverified social media posts to inform users that a single camera manufactured by Flock Safety held between 1 and 5 grams of gold and up to 23 pounds of copper. The false output valued the recoverable gold at roughly $650 per unit—despite the entire camera device weighing only about three pounds.

The erroneous figures stemmed from anti-surveillance online campaigns that framed automated license plate readers as lucrative targets for physical destruction. Google’s system pulled data from an anonymous Substack post titled “do.not.obey.do.not.comply”—which admitted its scrap values were unverified estimates—and an AI-generated Instagram account primarily dedicated to hydroponics and plant cloning.

Following reports of the error, Google revised the generated answer to explicitly refute the claims. The updated query response informs searchers that claims of recoverable precious metals are false, attributing the high estimates to “internet memes and AI hallucinations” and clarifying that the cameras carry only trace amounts of gold typical of standard small electronics.

Flock Safety operates automated recognition networks widely used by police departments and private clients. The devices use hardware cameras and machine learning models to capture vehicle license plates, convert the images into searchable text, and flag matches across centralized databases in seconds.

The technology has drawn pushback from privacy advocates over continuous monitoring and documented cases of officer misuse, including unauthorized checks on romantic partners. The criticism has fueled online protest memes advocating for the destruction of the hardware, which Google’s automated search tools ingested and presented as factual technical data.
