Google Launches Parent-Controlled Balances for Kids in Mobile Wallet Expansion
Parents in the U.S. can now set up supervised spending pots for kids on Android and Wear OS devices.
Alphabet Inc.’s Google has introduced parent-managed digital spending accounts for children and teenagers on Google Wallet, allowing younger users in the United States to make tap-to-pay purchases without holding a traditional bank account.
The new integration operates through Google’s existing Family Link ecosystem, enabling parents to deposit money into a supervised balance. Children can execute transactions using an Android smartphone or Wear OS smartwatch anywhere Google Pay is accepted.
To manage spending and guard against loss, the platform gives parents continuous oversight. Guardians can track account activity through itemized transaction lists or opt into push notifications via Family Link. The system also permits parents to trigger remote spending timeouts or freeze accounts if a mobile device goes missing.
Google stated the tool aims to help parents teach healthy financial habits and prevent overspending. The launch brings Google Wallet closer to feature parity with rival Apple Inc., which debuted Apple Cash Family in 2020 as major hardware manufacturers seek early adoption among younger demographics.
