1inch Introduces Aqua Protocol to Unify Cross-Chain Liquidity and Boost Capital Efficiency
The cross-chain framework allows market makers to quote liquidity across multiple venues directly from self-custody wallets.
Decentralized exchange aggregation platform 1inch has rolled out Aqua, a specialized framework designed to connect fragmented liquidity pools across multiple decentralized finance ecosystems without requiring market makers to lock capital into individual smart contracts.
The protocol has launched across 13 EVM-compatible networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, and the Robinhood Chain. Rather than transferring assets into automated market maker contracts, liquidity providers using Aqua retain full custody of their assets inside personal wallets until a trade is executed and settled on-chain.
Aqua operates via an architecture combining an on-chain registry, wallet-backed liquidity strategies, atomic settlement, and position management tools. This structure allows market makers to advertise a single balance across multiple platforms simultaneously—functioning similarly to coordinated overbooking in traditional finance. For instance, an operator holding $10,000 in capital can list that entire sum across three distinct venues, creating $30,000 in nominal market presence while capping total actual execution at the underlying $10,000 balance.
To prevent double-spending or failed orders, Aqua quotes prices dynamically against a liquidity provider’s real-time wallet balance. If an incoming trade request exceeds the remaining balance, the transaction automatically reverts through atomic execution. Currently, participation is restricted to professional resolvers who possess 1inch-issued access credentials.
To spur deployment and trading volume, 1inch plans to introduce a liquidity incentive package containing 500,000 USDC alongside 10 million 1INCH tokens, subject to approval by tokenholders through an upcoming governance vote. The proposed capital allocation aims to bootstrap order book depth and swap velocity across initial trading pairs.
Capital fragmentation has long posed a structural challenge for decentralized finance protocols, as liquidity providers are historically forced to divide their balance sheets across dozens of competing trading platforms and Layer-2 scaling networks. By transitioning toward wallet-based, just-in-time liquidity availability, protocols seek to increase capital efficiency while eliminating the smart contract exposure inherent in conventional liquidity pools.
The launch of Aqua arrives shortly after co-founder Anton Bukov publicly disclosed that he was removed from his role at 1inch in November 2025 following disagreements regarding internal operational decisions and corporate governance.
