Motorola Launches Indigenous Collections Mobile App to Preserve Ojibwe Heritage and Language

Motorola has launched a dedicated mobile software application designed to archive, preserve, and distribute the Ojibwe language alongside traditional cultural narratives. Developed in direct collaboration with members of the Rainy Lake Ojibwe community, the platform, named Indigenous Collections, offers users interactive access to native stories, regional landmarks, and historical family knowledge.

The development team worked extensively with native language scholars and educators to build the digital archive. Primary contributors include Jason Jones, a veteran Ojibwe language instructor, and Dr. Anton Treuer, an author and professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University in Minnesota. Dr. Treuer emphasized that utilizing digital storytelling serves as an effective mechanism for passing down vocabulary, worldview, and historical lineage across generations, noting that expanding the archive will bolster its long-term educational impact.

The project represents the latest milestone under the broader Indigenous Languages Initiative, a joint effort between Motorola and the Lenovo Foundation. The global initiative aims to digitize endangered languages and adapt modern mobile device user interfaces to support indigenous dialects, helping bridge the technology gap for native speakers.

Language revitalization through software has gained significant momentum globally, aligned with UNESCO’s International Decade of Indigenous Languages framework spanning 2022 to 2032. Indigenous languages such as Ojibwe—also known as Anishinaabemowin—are historically rooted in the Great Lakes region across North America, but face critical risks of decline as elder fluent speakers pass away. Software integrations allow native communities to record oral histories digitally while standardizing mobile smartphone accessibility.

Available as a free download on the Google Play Store for Android users, Indigenous Collections is designed with cultural privacy controls. To ensure sensitive tribal customs and sacred traditions remain protected within the community, the application exclusively hosts and displays content intended for public sharing.
