Meta Expands Meta AI into Threads Direct Messages in Global Rollout
Users can now interact privately with the AI assistant, sharing posts and media directly inside their Threads inbox.
Meta has initiated a global rollout bringing its generative artificial intelligence assistant directly into direct messaging on Threads, expanding the tool’s reach across its social ecosystem.
The update allows users to start private conversations with Meta AI within Threads DMs. Through the inbox interface, individuals can share posts, images, web links, and video clips with the chatbot to ask follow-up questions, summarize content, or conduct deeper research without leaving the app.
While public interactions with Meta AI on Threads feeds have been in limited regional testing—akin to how X handles xAI’s Grok assistant—the private inbox deployment is going worldwide starting Monday.
Incorporating the chatbot into Threads DMs brings the platform into alignment with Meta’s broader suite of applications. The tech giant previously embedded Meta AI into direct messaging across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger as part of an aggressive push to establish its assistant as a daily utility for billions of users.
By consolidating these capabilities within its existing app ecosystem, Meta aims to retain user attention and reduce reliance on third-party generative AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
For public feeds, Meta confirmed that regional testing of Meta AI responses remains ongoing. To address user feedback regarding automated engagement, Meta offers several controls: users can mute the @meta.ai account, flag AI responses with a “Not interested” preference, or manually hide AI-generated replies appearing under their public posts.
