Coinbase to Expand Singapore Workforce by One-Third as Asian Crypto Hub Gains Ground
The US cryptocurrency exchange plans to increase its local headcount to 200 by the end of 2026, leveraging Singapore's regulatory clarity.
Coinbase is expanding its footprint in Singapore, planning to increase its local workforce by one-third over the next two years. The US-based cryptocurrency exchange aims to grow its headcount in the city-state from the current 150 employees to approximately 200 by the end of 2026.
This recruitment drive underscores Singapore’s growing importance as a regional anchor for Coinbase’s international growth strategy. The expansion follows a significant regulatory milestone in October 2023, when the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) granted Coinbase a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license. This license permits the platform to offer digital payment token services to both retail and institutional clients in the country, solidifying its legal standing in one of Asia’s premier financial hubs.
The move to bolster its presence in Singapore comes as Coinbase navigates a challenging regulatory landscape in its home market. The company has been locked in a high-profile legal battle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which sued the exchange in June 2023 for allegedly operating as an unregistered national securities exchange, broker, and clearing agency. In response to domestic regulatory friction, Coinbase has accelerated its “Go Broad, Go Deep” international expansion strategy, targeting jurisdictions with clearer regulatory frameworks, including the European Union, Canada, Brazil, and Australia.
Singapore has successfully positioned itself as an attractive destination for digital asset firms by establishing a comprehensive licensing regime under its Payment Services Act. While MAS has taken a strict stance against retail crypto speculation—implementing measures such as banning public advertising of crypto services and restricting credit facilities for token purchases—it has actively encouraged institutional blockchain development.
By expanding its Singapore team, Coinbase joins a competitive ecosystem of global Web3 companies that have secured regulatory approval in the city-state, including Ripple, Circle, and Blockchain.com. The additional hiring will support Coinbase’s localized product offerings, compliance operations, and regional business development as it seeks to capture a larger share of the Asian digital asset market.
