Range Rover Previews Ultra-Minimalist Electric Grand Tourer Built on New EMA Platform

The upcoming electric model marks a major strategic shift for the luxury brand, featuring a minimalist cabin and physical safety controls.

Range Rover is preparing to expand its luxury lineup beyond traditional high-riding SUVs with the introduction of the Range Rover GT, an all-electric grand tourer designed to combine high-performance electric driving with long-distance refinement. Built on the automaker’s new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), the upcoming model represents a significant strategic pivot as the brand seeks to capture a share of the luxury electric grand tourer market.

According to Martin Limpert, managing director of Range Rover, the new vehicle is designed to be the most car-like model in the brand’s history while maintaining its traditional all-terrain capabilities. The GT is engineered to complement the brand’s existing powertrain portfolio, offering a modern interpretation of a grand tourer that emphasizes effortless electric performance and a quiet, calming cabin environment.

The transition to the EMA platform is part of a broader electrification push by parent company JLR, formerly known as Jaguar Land Rover. The EMA is the company’s third electrifiable architecture, sitting alongside the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) used for larger Range Rover models, and the Jaguar Electrified Architecture (JEA). The JEA platform is currently being developed for Jaguar’s own highly anticipated four-door grand tourer, the Type 01, which is scheduled to debut later this year.

Inside, the Range Rover GT departs sharply from the upright, commanding dashboards of the brand’s traditional SUVs. The cabin adopts an ultra-minimalist design language, utilizing a sophisticated mix of premium textiles and alternative materials. Rather than overwhelming the front passenger with digital real estate, designers opted against a third passenger-side screen. Instead, the dashboard features high-resolution OLED displays for both the primary instrument cluster and the central infotainment touchscreen, complemented by a standard head-up display (HUD).

Despite the minimalist aesthetic, the interior retains physical controls for key vehicle functions. This design choice aligns with evolving safety standards, particularly in Europe. The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has increasingly pressured automakers to retain physical buttons, dials, or stalks for critical operations—such as turn signals, hazard lights, and windshield wipers—to minimize driver distraction and maintain top safety ratings.

The rear passenger compartment of the GT can be configured to suit different customer preferences. Buyers can choose between a spacious two-seat layout featuring individual rear buckets separated by a console, or a traditional three-seat bench configuration.

By entering the grand tourer segment, Range Rover enters a highly competitive space currently occupied by established electric models. While the vehicle remains under camouflage during its testing phase, JLR is expected to release complete specifications, performance metrics, and unmasked design details later this year.
