Google Testing Advanced Voice Customization Sliders for Gemini AI Assistant

Google is preparing to introduce advanced voice customization controls for its Gemini assistant, allowing users to fine-tune how the artificial intelligence sounds beyond selecting a pre-recorded voice.

The upcoming feature, discovered in the code of the latest Gemini application package (APK) by tech publication 9to5Google, will introduce slider controls for four distinct vocal attributes: speed, energy, formality, and warmth. Such APK teardowns frequently reveal upcoming features before their official public release, offering a roadmap of Google’s development priorities. This level of granular control aims to make interactions with the AI assistant feel more natural and personalized.

According to the code analysis, the energy, formality, and warmth settings will offer low, medium, and high thresholds. For instance, reducing the formality slider will prompt Gemini to adopt a more casual, friendly tone. The speed slider will feature slow, normal, and fast indicators, designed with built-in constraints to prevent the assistant from speaking too rapidly or interrupting users mid-sentence.

This development comes as tech giants fiercely compete to dominate conversational AI. OpenAI set a high benchmark with its Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT, emphasizing emotional expression and realistic vocal interactions. Google has countered with its own Gemini Live platform. By introducing adjustable vocal parameters, Google is addressing a key user preference: the desire for an assistant that can adapt its demeanor to suit different contexts, such as professional tasks or casual conversations.

Once Google officially rolls out the update, users will be able to access these adjustments by navigating to the sidebar menu within the Gemini app, selecting Settings, and tapping on the Gemini Voice option. It remains unclear whether these advanced voice controls will be available to all users for free or if they will be restricted to subscribers of the Google One AI Premium plan, which currently gates several of the company’s most advanced AI models and features.
