Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Dominates Box Office with Historic $264 Million Global Debut
The R-rated epic outpaces ‘Oppenheimer’ and drives record-breaking IMAX ticket sales despite casting controversies.
Christopher Nolan has once again demonstrated his unmatched drawing power at the global box office. His latest cinematic venture, “The Odyssey”, secured a spectacular $124.5 million domestically and an additional $139.6 million from international markets during its opening weekend. This massive $264.1 million global launch surpassed the debut of his 2023 Oscar-winning masterpiece, “Oppenheimer”, making it the director’s most successful box office opening since the 2012 release of “The Dark Knight Rises”.
Distributed by Universal Pictures, the R-rated adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic represents a massive financial bet. The studio spent $250 million on production and an additional $125 million on marketing. However, the investment has quickly paid off, driven largely by audiences seeking out premium large-format screens.
The film was marketed as Nolan’s first feature captured entirely using high-resolution IMAX cameras. This technical milestone turned the release into a massive event for film enthusiasts. According to Rich Gelfond, the chief executive of IMAX, the demand was so unprecedented that some theaters scheduled 3 a.m. screenings to accommodate crowds. IMAX alone accounted for $29.6 million of the domestic total and $51.8 million globally, marking the company’s highest-grossing weekend in history.
This theatrical triumph comes amid a broader resurgence for the cinema industry. Data from Rentrak indicates that this summer’s ticket sales are running 10.4% ahead of last year, putting the domestic box office on track to surpass $10 billion annually for the first time since the pandemic. Nolan has long been a champion of the traditional theatrical experience, famously pushing for the release of *Tenet* in 2020 when most theaters were shuttered.
The film’s star-studded ensemble includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Charlize Theron as Calypso. Despite the star power, the production faced online backlash from conservative commentators over its diverse casting choices, particularly the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as a soldier. Tech billionaire Elon Musk even criticized Nolan’s casting decisions on social media.
However, the controversy failed to deter moviegoers. “The Odyssey” has earned widespread critical acclaim, boasting a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving a coveted “A” CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences.
Nolan’s dominance left little room for competitors. Disney’s live-action remake of *Moana* fell to a distant second place, earning $19 million in its third weekend. The film has struggled to find its footing, grossing just $178 million globally against a hefty $250 million budget. Universal’s *Minions & Monsters* and Disney’s *Toy Story 5* followed in third and fourth place, each bringing in approximately $15 million.
