Citroën Targets €15,000 Price for Electric 2 CV Production

Two-year timeline and budget pricing for the electric revival.

Citroën is accelerating plans for a new Citroën electric model, using its most recognizable historic nameplate to reach budget-conscious buyers.

After revealing the Citroën 2 CV Concept at the Paris Motor Show, the French automaker confirmed it intends to build a production version within the next two years. The target starting price is €15,000 for the EV, or approximately $16,800.

That price point positions the revival of the electric 2 CV directly against the growing wave of budget EVs emerging across Europe. Citroën aims to deliver an affordable electric car while matching the original 2 CV’s reputation for affordability and lightness. The first generation debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1948 and remained in production until 1990, becoming a symbol of post-war practical mobility.

The concept car maintains the heritage silhouette but strips away nonessential elements for modern efficiency. Inside, Citroën replaced the center console with a removable storage basket and swapped the fixed radio for a detachable unit. The front passenger seat is also removable, expanding cargo capacity when needed. Instrumentation moves away from a traditional dashboard to a single stem holding the steering wheel, controls, and an eight-inch touchscreen.

Some concept-specific details, such as the brake pedal marked with a tortoise and the accelerator bearing a rabbit, likely will not survive regulatory scrutiny. Production models must meet strict safety and accessibility rules that often force designers to abandon playful conceptual features.

Citroën described the goal as a “more accessible, lighter and more essential electric car,” suggesting the final product will prioritize utility over novelty. The brand does not currently sell vehicles in the United States, so American buyers cannot purchase the car even if production begins as scheduled.

The announcement follows the original 2 CV’s appearance in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, leveraging nostalgia to support the new model’s market entry.
