Colwill and Caicedo headline Chelsea’s recovery concerns before Hull City

LONDON — Chelsea’s 6-3 Carabao Cup victory over Leeds United at Stamford Bridge secured advancement, but the third-round tie left Xabi Alonso managing recovery timelines across all three outfield lines before matches against Hull City on September 12 and Brentford on September 18.

Moises Caicedo remains on a conservative rehabilitation program after a persistent calf injury disrupted the start of his campaign. The Ecuadorian international missed Chelsea’s opening two competitive matches before returning against Brighton & Hove Albion, only to be forced off after 14 minutes. He then missed the fixtures against Arsenal and Leeds.

Alonso accepted responsibility for Caicedo’s setback, describing the current problem as an aggravation of the original strain rather than a new injury. “He has a problem in his calf,” Alonso said. “No [it is not a new injury]. It was the same one he had before Brighton. I wanted to have Moi [for that game]. Probably it was my mistake to push him too early, so that’s why I’m cautious now not to make the same mistake.”

Chelsea’s medical staff has targeted the September 12 meeting with Hull City for Caicedo’s potential return to the matchday squad. The club is using a conservative progression to prevent further soft-tissue relapses, while the coaching staff continues to weigh senior substitutions and second-half adjustments after Chelsea fell 2-0 behind Leeds.

Central defender Levi Colwill also requires monitoring. He had been held out of the Premier League fixture against Arsenal as a precaution because of a training knock, then started against Leeds before being replaced by Wesley Fofana. Colwill walked directly down the tunnel for medical evaluation, and his previous anterior cruciate ligament injury has heightened vigilance regarding his physical condition.

Alonso played down the severity of the defender’s early exit in his post-match briefing. “It is just from little things that he’s having, but we don’t expect that it’s an injury,” Alonso said. The club anticipates Colwill will be available when Chelsea hosts Hull City on September 12, provided he clears standard recovery protocols without further discomfort.

Marco Palestra could add to Chelsea’s defensive depth against Hull City. The Italian defender joined the club from Serie A side Atalanta and featured regularly during pre-season training, although a knock sustained before the opening week delayed his competitive integration. “I’m fine, it’s still a few days away, but I feel much better,” Palestra said.

Jordan Henderson, who arrived at Stamford Bridge on a free transfer from Brentford, is entering the final phase of rehabilitation from an unusual upper-body injury. He fractured his wrist while celebrating England’s World Cup quarterfinal victory against Mexico, preventing him from making his competitive debut for Chelsea.

Henderson has nevertheless traveled with the team to domestic fixtures while maintaining conditioning sessions. “He has been very close to the team,” Alonso said of Henderson. “Even being injured, he has been travelling with us [to games]. I know that he likes and he needs to have this connection with the team, to have this impact on the pitch and off the pitch. He has been training very
