Alexander Isak Turns Liverpool Transfer Into a Statement
Isak’s Liverpool resurgence follows injury-hit debut season

LIVERPOOL, England — Alexander Isak has scored three goals in the opening four matches of the current Premier League campaign, matching his entire Premier League goal output from the previous year.
The 26-year-old Swedish international striker was limited to 22 appearances and 1,032 minutes across all competitions during his introductory campaign at Liverpool. A severe leg break in December 2025 kept him sidelined until April 2026, leaving him unable to establish consistent form under the expectations attached to his transfer fee.

“The leg break was tough. Anyone who has had a long injury would know,” Isak said in an interview with BBC Sport. “But on the other hand, when you’re in a good place and when you feel good, you don’t really tend to look back because it doesn’t really benefit you. So I’m just looking forward and feel really optimistic and excited about the season, and what it can bring to us.”
His record-shattering move to Liverpool was completed on deadline day in September 2025. The British-record £125 million deal, approximately $163 million, concluded a tense standoff with Newcastle United and made the transfer one of the most expensive in football history.
Isak had originally joined Newcastle from Spanish club Real Sociedad in August 2022 for a club-record £63 million. During his time at St James’ Park, he established himself as one of Europe’s premier frontmen, although his relationship with the Newcastle board deteriorated during his final months at the club.
The forward publicly said that promises made to him by Newcastle executives had been “broken.” He subsequently missed the club’s pre-season schedule in 2025 while pushing for an exit.

The catalyst for Isak’s return to peak physical condition came over the summer on the international stage. Representing Sweden at the World Cup, he helped guide his national team to the Round of 32, where France eventually eliminated Sweden. Isak finished the tournament with one goal and three assists.
“Playing for your country in a World Cup is a dream of most people,” Isak said. “With the injuries last season, the World Cup was perfect. I had that period where I could play and gain rhythm and form. And, on top of that, it was a massive experience, so that was perfect to do and come back here for pre-season and to start the season.”
Despite the abrupt departure from Newcastle and the injury troubles that marked his arrival at Liverpool, Isak said he had never second-guessed his decision to join the six-time European champions.
“Liverpool is a massive club, and everything about the club made it pretty clear,” Isak said. “And the club’s ambition and the club’s will to get me in as well. It was a big part of it.”
When asked whether he had regretted the transfer during his five-month recovery from the leg fracture, Isak was definitive.
“No, never. I would never think like that,” he said.
