Threads Turns Podcasts Into Its Next Creator Growth Engine
Meta adds podcast discovery and creator analytics to Threads

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Threads is adding podcast-specific publishing and measurement tools as Meta Platforms Inc. makes an explicit bid to capture the digital creator market. The social app is being developed as a media discovery platform with features for podcast distribution, audience tracking, and episode promotion.
Threads launched in July 2023 under Meta’s Instagram division, led by Instagram head Adam Mosseri and Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg. Built as a text-centric companion to Instagram, the app reached 100 million user registrations within its first five days. Its newest creator tools and outbound link analytics are part of Meta’s broader initiative to establish Threads as a central destination for public conversation and real-time media commentary.
Meta’s approach differs from the algorithmic architecture historically used across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, where posts containing external web links have been suppressed to keep users inside the company’s proprietary app ecosystems. The new rollout creates an exception for digital audio, giving podcasters custom publishing options while tracking referral traffic sent outside the platform.
Creators can attach playable audio previews, publish excerpted transcripts directly in text posts, and display embedded video clips for video-enabled shows. Threads can automatically pull show details and let creators tag featured guests, while automated prompts issued after an episode premiere remind producers to publish updates on the app.

Listeners can bookmark episodes inside Threads and return to them later on their preferred streaming services. For producers, an in-app insights dashboard is tailored to podcast performance, measuring link click-through counts, bookmark saves, and total impressions generated by individual promotional posts. Standard platform analytics have offered limited visibility into outbound link performance.
The Threads podcast tools were publicly previewed in August 2025 by Connor Hayes, head of product for Threads. Hayes said Meta was designing transcript-sharing mechanisms to better serve commentary and conversational media on the network.
Meta’s current plan does not host full audio files natively, as the company attempted in 2021. Instead, Threads functions as an intermediary discovery network, using short clips, text excerpts, and visual previews to direct audiences to external RSS feeds and hosting services.
The company previously launched a native podcast player inside Facebook in June 2021, along with the short-form audio products known as “Soundbites” and live streaming audio rooms. Meta dismantled that internal audio suite in May 2022, shutting down native streaming to reallocate corporate resources toward short-form video products such as Instagram Reels.
Short-form video snippets made from podcast recordings have since become a major top-of-funnel growth vector across digital media. Spotify has expanded its infrastructure to host more than 250,000 video podcasts, while Google shuttered its standalone Google Podcasts app in April 2024 to centralize audio discovery and video streaming inside YouTube and YouTube Music. X has continued marketing its native video and live Spaces audio products to independent media outlets.
