Alonso Abandons Chelsea Experiment as Injuries Force Tactical Reset
Injuries push Alonso back to Chelsea’s trusted 3-4-2-1

LONDON — Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is expected to return to the 3-4-2-1 system for Saturday’s Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge after his midweek tactical experiment exposed the team’s lack of control in possession. The system has produced Chelsea’s most balanced performances this season, while a persistent wave of injuries has reduced Alonso’s squad rotation options.
The Spanish tactician built his reputation for structural fluidity and defensive organization during his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen. Against Leeds United, however, his experimental 4-3-3 left Chelsea 2-0 down before a furious second-half rally secured a chaotic 6-3 victory.
Chelsea’s midfield problems remain tied in part to Moises Caicedo’s recurring calf injury. The Ecuadorian midfielder and former Brighton & Hove Albion star has struggled to complete his return to the starting lineup, and a 14-minute substitute appearance against his former club triggered another flare-up. Alonso has officially ruled Caicedo out of Saturday’s match, with next week’s West London derby against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium identified as a realistic return target.
Caicedo subsequently missed the narrow 2-1 London derby defeat to Arsenal as well as the high-scoring victory over Leeds. His absence also contributed to a highly experimental midfield in midweek, when debutant Reggie Watson operated as a lone defensive pivot while full-backs Malo Gusto and Valentin Barco took advanced central roles.
The improvised combination struggled to maintain possession and protect the backline. Alonso is therefore expected to restore Romeo Lavia to the starting XI, where the Belgian midfielder will anchor the midfield alongside club captain Reece James. James is expected to play in a central role, providing physicality and composure.
Other summer acquisitions remain unavailable. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is still sidelined with a fractured wrist suffered while celebrating England’s victory over Mexico at the historic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Dutch forward Emmanuel Emegha is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during a closed-doors pre-season friendly against National League side Bromley.
Italian defender Marco Palestra, signed to provide depth on the flanks, is also still waiting to make his competitive debut for the Blues after suffering a training-ground knock on the eve of the campaign. On the left wing-back flank, Dutch international Jorrel Hato is expected to continue, while Portuguese winger Pedro Neto is projected to start on the right.
Neto’s explosive appearance as a substitute against Leeds included the crucial goal that put Chelsea 3-2 ahead and has made him indispensable to Saturday’s tactical setup. In goal, Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is set to reclaim his starting place after being rested in midweek for Belgian teenage prospect Mike Penders.
Levi Colwill is expected to start in central defense with summer signing Maxence Lacroix, despite Colwill heading straight down the tunnel after being substituted against Leeds. Alonso quickly dismissed that incident as a non-injury precaution. The final place in the back three remains a contest between French defender Wesley Fofana and academy graduate Josh Acheampong, with Fofana favored to start on the right side.
Chelsea’s attack will feature Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers as dual playmaker options behind Joao Pedro. Pedro was recently named the Premier League Player of the Month after a prolific run of form and will spearhead the frontline. Rogers earned his starting place after an impactful substitute performance against Leeds, displacing more veteran options.
Projected Chelsea Lineup (3-4-2-1): Emiliano Martínez; Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill; Pedro Neto, Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Jorrel Hato; Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers; Joao Pedro.
