Dortmund Move Sparks European Battle for Leicester Teen Louis Page

Borussia Dortmund sent scouts to watch Leicester City midfielder Louis Page during the club’s recent 4-3 victory over Stockport County at Edgeley Park. Page created two goals in the match, and Dortmund’s attendance has turned a domestic scouting race into a cross-border transfer battle involving ten top-tier clubs across Europe and the English Premier League.


Manchester United tried to sign Page during the summer transfer window and continues to maintain internally that it is in pole position to secure his signature. The club’s pursuit forms part of a wider operational shift under its revamped sporting leadership, which has prioritized securing high-potential youth talent globally. Recent additions under that directive include 16-year-old forward Chido Obi-Martin from Arsenal’s academy and 18-year-old Malian midfielder Sekou Kone from Guidars FC.

Representatives from Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle United, and Sunderland were also at Edgeley Park to monitor Page. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur have separately logged formal scouting interest in the central midfielder.

Page’s two-assist display showcased his technical composure, ball retention under pressure, and passing vision. Those qualities have prompted stylistic comparisons within elite recruitment circles to Jude Bellingham during his early development at Birmingham City.

Dortmund’s model has previously taken several high-profile English academy prospects to Germany. The club signed 17-year-old winger Jadon Sancho from Manchester City’s academy for approximately £8 million in August 2017. Sancho later made 137 appearances for Dortmund, scoring 50 goals, before joining Manchester United in July 2021 for £73 million.

In July 2020, Dortmund recruited 17-year-old midfielder Jude Bellingham from EFL Championship club Birmingham City for an initial £25 million. That deal made him the most expensive 17-year-old in football history at the time. Bellingham played 132 games for Dortmund before moving to Real Madrid in June 2023 for an initial €103 million (£88.5 million).

Dortmund’s current first-team squad also includes 20-year-old English winger Jamie Gittens, who joined the club’s youth setup from Manchester City in September 2020. The German side’s interest in Page follows its established strategy of signing young British players before their senior first-team breakthroughs in England.

The financial route for a move abroad also differs from the domestic process. Under FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, cross-border transfers involving out-of-contract players under the age of 23 use standardized FIFA Training Compensation and Solidarity Mechanism calculations. Overseas clubs can therefore have a clear, predetermined cost structure.

Within England, compensation fees for out-of-contract academy players under 24 are determined by the Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC) tribunal when the two clubs cannot agree on a valuation under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP).

The growing attention places Leicester City under pressure as Page’s stock rises. The club operates from its £100 million training complex in Seagrave, Leicestershire, and its academy has produced several high-value homegrown players in recent seasons.

Leicester’s previous high-profile academy departures include left-back Ben Chilwell, who joined Chelsea for £45 million in 2020; winger Harvey Barnes, who moved to Newcastle United for £38 million in 2023; and midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who transferred to Chelsea for £30 million in 2024. Those deals generated significant transfer returns under Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Domestic Premier League sides and European suitors are continuing to monitor Page’s development closely ahead of upcoming transfer windows.
