Champions League Team of the Week: Barcola Leads Matchday 2
PSG's Bradley Barcola earns Player of the Week honors while teammates Dembélé, Doué and Akliouche miss the cut

Bradley Barcola’s three-goal demolition of LASK anchored UEFA’s official Team of the Week for Matchday 2 of the 2026-2027 Champions League league phase, earning the Paris Saint-Germain winger the competition’s Player of the Week distinction.
The selection, released Thursday, reflects a matchday defined by individual brilliance rather than collective dominance from Europe’s traditional powerhouses. Barcola’s hat-trick in Austria was the most prolific single performance of the round, securing his place alongside established stars who delivered decisive contributions elsewhere.
Lamine Yamal earned recognition through playmaking rather than goalscoring. The Barcelona forward registered two assists against Galatasaray, maintaining his rapid ascent as one of the primary creative engines in European football. Harry Kane also secured a spot after netting twice against Viking FK, continuing the Bayern Munich striker’s relentless scoring pace since arriving in Germany.
While Barcola represents PSG in the lineup, the French club’s broader attacking contingent was shut out. Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Maghnes Akliouche all failed to make the cut despite their prominent roles in Luis Enrique’s system. Midfielder Vitinha stands as the only other Parisian selected, underscoring how UEFA’s technical observers prioritized direct goal involvement over possession metrics or defensive work rates during this specific round.
The Champions League league phase format, introduced in 2024 to replace the traditional group stage, has fundamentally altered how these weekly honors are calculated. With all 36 teams competing in a single table and facing eight different opponents across the opening phase, Matchday 2 performances carry distinct weight. Players are evaluated against a much wider statistical pool than the old six-match group format allowed, making standout individual performances harder to achieve and more significant when recognized.
UEFA’s technical observer panel compiles the Team of the Week using a combination of advanced data metrics — including expected goals, progressive carries, defensive actions and pass completion under pressure — alongside subjective evaluations of match-defining moments. The Player of the Week award typically goes to the individual whose performance most directly altered the outcome of their fixture, a threshold Barcola met decisively with his treble against the Austrian side.
Matchday 3 of the 2026-2027 Champions League league phase is scheduled for early November.
