Wales Women Face England in Rugby League World Cup Debut
A program founded in 2021 fields three uncapped starters against England in Perth after securing qualification through just two European matches.

PERTH, Australia — A Welsh women’s rugby league program that did not exist in international competition five years ago opens its first Rugby League World Cup campaign against England on Saturday in Perth, confronting a 144-point aggregate deficit from two recent meetings with the same opponent.
The Group A matchup marks only the 14th full international for Wales since the team played its inaugural test match in June 2021. Head coach Tom Brindle has assembled a 21-player squad featuring three uncapped starters and two potential debutants on the interchange bench, reflecting the rapid roster turnover inherent to an emerging national side.
Among the newcomers is Canterbury Bulldogs captain Tayla Preston, a Sydney native who qualifies through heritage and will start at scrum-half alongside stand-off Ffion Lewis. Lewis becomes the first Welsh woman to compete in a World Cup across both rugby codes. Second-rower Paige Travis also debuts for Wales after previously representing England at the delayed 2021 tournament held in 2022. International eligibility rules in rugby league permit players to switch nations if they hold a passport or meet ancestry requirements, a pathway increasingly utilized by developing programs seeking experienced talent from established leagues.
Center Hannah Bluck represents Wales in her fourth sport, having earned 15 senior caps in rugby union while also competing internationally in basketball and under-19 football. Multi-sport athletes remain common in emerging rugby league nations where the player pool is shallow compared to traditional powerhouses like Australia, New Zealand, and England.
On the bench, Erin Williams could earn her sixth career cap in any form of rugby league after switching from union side Gwalia Lightning to the Cardiff Demons midway through the domestic season. Her older brother Zak previously represented Wales in the men’s game, underscoring how family pipelines currently sustain the country’s participation base.
Captain Bethan Dainton, who leads the side out in Perth, anchored a European qualifying campaign that required only two matches to secure a World Cup berth. Wales defeated Ireland 28-10 in Cardiff before routing the Netherlands 48-6 in June 2024. The International Rugby League expanded qualification access for the 2026 women’s tournament, allowing emerging European nations direct pathways that previously required navigating multi-stage regional playoffs.
That accelerated entry has exposed significant competitive gaps. England dismantled Wales 82-0 in Leeds in November 2024, followed by a 62-0 defeat at the Gnoll in Neath during a subsequent friendly. Sandwiched between those losses was an 18-12 victory over Scotland and a 14-0 pre-tournament defeat to Canada in July, illustrating the volatility of results for a team lacking consistent high-level fixtures.
After Saturday’s opener, Wales travels to Sydney to face Samoa on Friday, Oct. 23. Samoa last appeared at a women’s World Cup in 2008, making them an unpredictable variable. The group stage concludes against defending champions and co-hosts Australia on Sunday, Nov. 1.
The women’s Rugby League World Cup debuted in 2000 but remained sporadic until adopting a regular cycle aligned with the men’s tournament. Australia won the most recent edition in 2022, defeating New Zealand in the final. The 2026 iteration features expanded broadcast coverage and increased funding from the IRL, part of a broader strategy to professionalize the women’s game outside Oceania.
Brindle views the tournament as a catalyst for European development beyond his own squad. Historically, northern hemisphere women’s rugby league relied almost exclusively on England and France for competitive fixtures. Wales’ emergence has prompted increased activity from Ireland and Scotland, whose domestic structures are beginning to formalize.
Saturday’s fixture in Perth serves as the opening match of the tournament.
