PSG Rout Man City 4-1 at Etihad in Champions League Statement Win

French side dominate at Etihad in City's first home match since Premier League financial rules verdict

Paris Saint-Germain delivered a commanding 4-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, announcing themselves as serious Champions League contenders while inflicting further pain on the English champions in their first home match since the Premier League’s financial rules verdict.

Desire Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha all found the net in the first half as the French side built a three-goal cushion, with Maghnes Akliouche adding a late fourth after Erling Haaland had briefly given the hosts hope with an early second-half strike.

The result leaves Luis Enrique’s side firmly in control of their knockout-phase tie and raises fresh questions about City’s European credentials under Pep Guardiola, who watched from the stands while serving a touchline suspension.

City’s evening was framed by off-field turbulence. The club was found guilty last week of breaching Premier League financial regulations, a case that has hung over the squad for months. Wednesday marked their first home fixture since the verdict, and the atmosphere inside the Etihad carried an unmistakable tension before kickoff.

Guardiola’s absence from the technical area — serving a one-match European ban — meant assistant Juanma Lillo directed operations from the touchline. The Catalan’s presence in the directors’ box did little to settle a side that looked disjointed from the outset.

PSG struck first through Doué in the 18th minute, the 19-year-old French international cutting inside from the left and curling a finish beyond Ederson. Dembélé doubled the advantage ten minutes later, capitalizing on a hesitant City clearance to drive a low shot into the bottom corner.

Vitinha made it three before the break, the Portuguese midfielder ghosting into the box unmarked to convert a pinpoint cross from Nuno Mendes. City’s defending on all three occasions lacked the coordination that has defined their domestic dominance.

Haaland’s 53rd-minute header — his 45th Champions League goal — briefly ignited a comeback attempt. The Norwegian rose above Willian Pacho to meet Kevin De Bruyne’s corner, and for 20 minutes City pressed with genuine purpose. But PSG’s fourth, a composed finish from Akliouche after a swift counterattack, extinguished the revival.

The defeat compounds a difficult period for City, who have now lost three of their last four matches across all competitions. Their Champions League campaign, already complicated by a leaky defense that has conceded 10 goals in six matches, faces a daunting path to the knockout stages.

Elsewhere in Wednesday’s early window, Aston Villa took a commanding 3-0 lead over Fenerbahçe at Villa Park through goals from Ian Maatsen and a Jhon Durán brace, while Liverpool thrashed LASK 5-1 at Anfield with Cody Gakpo among the scorers.
