Ghirardelli Enters Packaged Cookie Aisle with Premium Crispy Line at $8.95 per Bag

Chocolate maker enters cookie aisle at double the price of mainstream brands

Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has launched its first-ever line of packaged cookies, marking the San Francisco-based chocolatier’s formal entry into the competitive ready-to-eat cookie aisle. The new crispy cookies arrive in two varieties — classic chocolate chip and double chocolate — and represent a strategic expansion for the 172-year-old brand beyond its core baking chocolate and premium bar business.

The 6.3-ounce bags contain 10 cookies each and carry a suggested retail price of $8.95, positioning the product firmly in the premium segment. That works out to roughly 89 cents per cookie, approximately double the per-unit cost of mainstream competitors. At Walmart, a 7-ounce store-brand package with 14 chocolate chip cookies sells for $4.97, while a national brand offers 14 cookies in a 6.9-ounce bag for $4.52.

Distribution began this month through Ghirardelli’s direct-to-consumer website and Kroger stores nationwide. Walmart shelves will receive the line on October 24, with broader national retail availability slated for January 2027. The phased rollout mirrors the company’s typical approach for new category entries, allowing supply chain calibration before mass distribution.

Ghirardelli’s move follows a broader industry trend where premium chocolate manufacturers leverage brand equity to capture higher-margin adjacencies. Lindt, Godiva, and Guittard have all expanded into baked goods or confectionery-adjacent categories in recent years, though with mixed commercial success. The cookie aisle in particular has seen intensified competition from both established players like Pepperidge Farm and Tate’s Bake Shop and newer entrants such as Chip City and Levain Bakery’s retail lines.

The company emphasizes its chocolate as the primary differentiator. Each cookie incorporates Ghirardelli’s signature chocolate chips — the same formulation that won the brand top honors in independent chocolate chip taste tests conducted by culinary publications. The crispy texture profile also distinguishes the product from the soft-baked dominant in the premium packaged segment.

Early consumer response on social platforms suggests strong brand loyalty translation. Instagram comments on the launch announcement accumulated thousands of engagements within 48 hours, with users specifically citing the chocolate chip reputation as a purchase driver. Whether that enthusiasm converts to repeat purchases at the premium price point will determine the line’s viability.

Ghirardelli, acquired by Swiss chocolate giant Lindt & Sprüngli in 1998, operates its flagship manufacturing facility in San Leandro, California. The company has not disclosed production volumes or sales targets for the cookie line.
