Jaguar’s Electric Future Hits a Snag: First Luxury EV Debut Delayed to 2027

Jaguar’s ambitious electric vehicle strategy has encountered a setback. The British brand had previously decided to definitively end combustion engine production. This move involved temporarily ceasing operations to focus entirely on developing a new line of luxury electric cars. The first model was originally slated for a global debut this December. Jaguar has now confirmed a significant delay, pushing back the worldwide unveiling.
The delay stems from a critical phase of technical development. Specifically, rigorous winter testing, essential for both combustion and electric vehicles, required more time. Jaguar had prepared for the December debut. While some manufacturers reveal models and continue testing, Jaguar chose to postpone. The brand instead used the time to showcase the prototype to select media outlets, primarily British. Journalists experienced the car as copilots, not drivers.

Jaguar’s First Electric Model Confirmed for 2027 Launch
A professional driver showcased the car’s capabilities at Jaguar’s Gaydon test track. This facility is shared with Land Rover. The driver also revealed technical details of this first electric Jaguar, previously seen in spy photos. The vehicle is a luxurious sedan with a distinct sporty character. It features frameless doors and a steeply sloping roofline. The rear design incorporates a solution similar to the Polestar 4.
The interior of the new electric Jaguar remains a closely guarded secret. It will not offer five seats. Instead, the car features a four-seat configuration with two independent rear seats. This four-door GT will integrate extensive technology across all areas, enhancing travel comfort. A British brand technician disclosed that a three-chamber air suspension system contributes to the high comfort level. The technician also mentioned “secret” technologies further enhancing the pleasant driving experience.
Jaguar’s first electric model utilizes a dedicated electric vehicle platform. The car employs three electric motors, delivering a combined output of 1,030 horsepower (CV). Two primary propulsion motors are located on the rear axle, providing approximately 900 horsepower. A third electric motor sits on the front axle, contributing between 100 and 200 horsepower. This front motor engages only when high power is required, grip is lost, or in the most demanding driving modes.
Over 1,000 HP and Luxury Technologies Define New Electric Jaguar
The car features all-wheel drive. It also includes torque vectoring, which distributes power to each axle and individual wheel. A rear-wheel steering system allows the rear wheels to turn up to 6 degrees. They can move in the same direction as the front wheels for stability at high speeds, or in the opposite direction to aid maneuvering. The vehicle rides on substantial 23-inch alloy wheels. These large wheels also help accommodate the considerable weight of the battery, which is positioned between the axles.
Jaguar has offered limited performance specifications. The driver demonstrating the luxury electric sedan indicated a top speed of 260 km/h. This speed might be electronically limited to 225 km/h. A lithium-ion battery, exceeding 120 kWh, will provide a maximum range of 800 kilometers. The Type 00 will support charging at up to 400 kW. This fast-charging capability allows the car to recover up to 320 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes.
Jaguar aims to enter the market before larger electric sedans from Rolls-Royce. The brand will likely achieve this, despite its market arrival scheduled for mid-2027. On paper, the new Jaguar presents strong arguments against competitors like Rolls-Royce. The luxury EV market has seen rapid shifts in customer perception and demand. Prices for this electric Jaguar will start from 110,000 euros. The top-tier models could reach 180,000 euros.
