Arsenal Eyes £100M+ Álvarez and Bournemouth’s Kroupi for Winter Overhaul

Álvarez and Kroupi on Arsenal January Shortlist

Arsenal is preparing to reshape its offensive options ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window, with Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez and AFC Bournemouth forward Éli Junior Kroupi on its preliminary shortlist, according to a report from CaughtOffside. The scouting initiative follows a period of significant structural turnover within manager Mikel Arteta’s attacking unit.

After capturing their first Premier League title in over two decades during the 2025–26 campaign—ending a championship drought dating back to the 2003–04 “Invincibles” era—the Gunners sanctioned the exits of several veteran forwards over the summer, including Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard. While the club reinforced its core with high-profile acquisitions elsewhere on the pitch—completing major deals for Brazil international midfielder Bruno Guimarães and England defender Ezri Konsa—the frontline saw more departures than arrivals.

According to the report, the two players under consideration offer distinctly different profiles and financial commitments. Julián Álvarez, the 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina, who previously won two Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League crown with Manchester City before moving to Spain, is viewed as an immediate, elite-level solution capable of operating across all forward positions. Arsenal explored several marquee targets during the summer market, including an inquiry for Aston Villa winger Morgan Rogers and an ambitious pursuit of Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior.

Those efforts concluded without agreements, as Rogers ultimately completed a big-money switch to Chelsea and Vinícius finalized a long-term contract extension in the Spanish capital. Arsenal concluded its summer offensive recruitment with the signing of Greek international winger Christos Tzolis, leaving the squad with limited depth on the left wing and prompting the recruitment department to evaluate January opportunities. Éli Junior Kroupi, the French youth international who developed in Ligue 1 with Lorient before moving to Bournemouth, represents a long-term developmental investment.

Valued at approximately £60 million by Transfermarkt, Kroupi would present a less costly alternative, though any potential pursuit remains contingent on medical evaluations following surgery for a metatarsal injury. However, any formal approach for Álvarez would require substantial capital, with Atlético Madrid expected to demand a transfer fee exceeding £100 million. The mid-season planning unfolds amid a strong start to the competitive calendar for the reigning champions.

Arteta’s side has maintained a perfect record through the early stages of the domestic campaign, most recently securing a 2-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea at Emirates Stadium. Despite the positive results, rotation and form in the central striking role remain focal points, with Swedish international forward Viktor Gyökeres recently featuring as a substitute against Chelsea. Club officials are expected to assess their squad depth and the recovery timelines of current options before deciding whether to trigger formal negotiations when the winter registration window opens.
