At the heart of this approach is the indispensable role of German international Kai Havertz, signed from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for a reported £65 million ($82 million). The forward’s ability to drop deep between defensive lines, connect play, occupy opposition center-backs, and rotate seamlessly across the front line has set an exceptionally high benchmark for any potential additions.

This tactical framework heavily influencing the club’s approach to high-profile forwards like Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish international joined the Portuguese club from Coventry City in 2023 for a club-record €20 million fee and secured a €100 million (£85.3 million) release clause after a prolific debut season in Lisbon. According to a report from TeamTalk, Arsenal’s internal stance regarding elite forward options is highly protective of squad harmony.

In their search for players who could replicate or enhance Havertz’s specific contributions, Arsenal’s recruitment department identified Argentine international Julián Álvarez as the closest stylistic match. Álvarez’s high-intensity pressing, mobility, and clinical finishing made him an attractive option during his tenure at Manchester City, where he won multiple Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy. However, the forward’s preference was heavily geared toward a move to Spain, with reports indicating his camp communicated that he would only consider leaving Manchester City for Barcelona.

The TeamTalk report indicates that Arsenal will not sanction any squad departures or major attacking reorganizations involving their top targets, including Gyökeres, unless an elite, top-class replacement is already secured. Club decision-makers are reportedly resistant to making cosmetic changes to the roster or signing players who merely maintain the status quo, choosing instead to protect the tactical cohesion built under Arteta. Álvarez ultimately completed a high-profile transfer to Atlético Madrid in August 2024 in a deal worth up to €95 million (£81.8 million), limiting Arsenal’s ability to secure his signature.

Similarly, Brentford forward Ivan Toney was heavily linked with a move to North London. Toney, who scored 20 Premier League goals during the 2022–23 season before serving an eight-month suspension for FA betting rule breaches, offered a proven physical presence in the penalty area. Despite these attributes, the TeamTalk report notes that Arsenal’s coaching staff did not view Toney as a clear upgrade over Havertz. Instead, Toney was evaluated as a like-for-like alternative to Gyökeres rather than a player capable of providing the fluid positional versatility that Arteta demands.

By maintaining a disciplined recruitment model, Arsenal’s leadership has signaled a willingness to rely on their existing squad depth rather than rushing into compromised deals under external pressure. Toney subsequently completed a £40 million transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli in August 2024.
