Zcash Jumps to No. 9 After Coinholders Override Governance Panels
Coinholders settle NU7’s economic model as ZEC rises to the world’s ninth-largest cryptocurrency

**NEW YORK** — Zcash (ZEC) climbed to an intraday high of $1,388 on Thursday and is currently trading at $1,368, a 10.9% daily gain and a 168% increase over the past 30 days. CoinGecko data puts the privacy-focused cryptocurrency’s market capitalization at $22.9 billion, making it the ninth-largest cryptocurrency by market value. Over the past 12 months, Zcash has gained more than 2,500%.
The rally followed a landmark governance vote that settled the parameters of the upcoming NU7 (Network Upgrade 7) protocol change. The high-turnout sentiment poll concluded Sunday, with Zcash coinholders overruling advisory panels on a key network sustainability question.
Turnout reached 66% of the eligible pool, setting a participation record for the network. Voters cast 2.4 million ZEC under a one-coin, one-vote system. Eligibility was based on spendable, shielded ZEC held in the “Ironwood” pool at block height 3,459,350, mined on August 24. Ballots were fully encrypted and divided into 16 unlinkable pieces, allowing organizers to tally the final results without exposing individual voter identities or balances.
The central dispute concerned when a new sustainability mechanism would begin recycling transaction fees back to miners. Advisory panels supported implementing the system “as soon as possible,” while the broader Zcash coinholder community favored a delay. In the final tally, 96.6% of participating voters selected February 2031 as the start date.
Following publication of the results on Sunday, Shielded Labs, Project Tachyon, ZODL, the Zcash Foundation, and the Valar Group issued a joint statement supporting February 2031. The groups called the date “the most conservative interpretation of the results” and said a future poll could revisit the timeline if necessary.
The NU7 sentiment poll also addressed four other structural questions. Voters approved reducing block generation times to 25 seconds, a change intended to improve transaction throughput and network responsiveness. They also voted to limit the final scope of NU7 to features fully completed and ready by September 30.
A separate 98.9% majority chose to preserve Zcash’s traditional, Bitcoin-style halving events instead of moving to a “smooth issuance” model. The decision preserves Zcash’s hard supply cap of 21 million coins. Like Bitcoin, Zcash periodically halves mining rewards by 50% roughly every four years, maintaining its deflationary monetary policy.
Voters additionally approved the immediate deprecation of the legacy Sprout pool. Sprout was Zcash’s original shielded address pool, launched at the network’s genesis in October 2016. Phasing out the infrastructure allows developers to reduce the codebase’s complexity and attack surface while focusing on newer shielded pools such as Sapling and Orchard.
The market response came as views of privacy-preserving technologies shifted among market participants and institutional investors. Privacy coins have faced stringent regulatory scrutiny and global exchange delistings for years because of anti-money laundering concerns. Last month, asset manager Grayscale launched a dedicated Zcash exchange-traded fund (ETF), helping legitimize the asset class for institutional players.
According to Roxana Nasoi, a core contributor at the privacy network Logos, the Grayscale launch gave institutional investors “a route to Zcash that didn’t exist before.” She said the technology’s core appeal remains straightforward: “Privacy denies everyone else the knowledge that makes you a target.”
Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey, said the Grayscale fund “alleviated regulatory concerns” and arrived alongside a structural change in the sector’s messaging. Instead of promoting “pure anonymity,” which has historically drawn the ire of financial regulators, the industry is emphasizing “financial privacy and confidentiality.”
That distinction has grown more important as blockchain analytics firms deploy sophisticated artificial intelligence tools to track public ledgers. “AI is rapidly reducing the cost of identifying address behaviors, counterparties, and asset changes,” Sun said, describing Zcash as the “leading front-runner” in rising demand for transaction confidentiality.
“The world is waking up to the need for on-chain privacy,” said Joe Andrews, chief executive of Aztec Labs. He said that over a three-month period, Zcash “dealt with a critical bug, shipped post-quantum upgrades to harden the protocol,” and saw its native token triple in value.
That security record followed a major technical crisis earlier this year. In July, Zcash activated its Ironwood upgrade to address a highly critical, four-year-old vulnerability. The flaw could have allowed a malicious actor to exploit zero-knowledge cryptography to counterfeit ZEC without detection.
The public disclosure of the vulnerability caused panic in the market and sent ZEC’s price down 38%. The Ironwood patch neutralized the threat by isolating and trapping any potential counterfeit coins within the retired legacy pool. The upgrade also added quantum-resistant transaction records to protect the network against future advances in quantum computing.
Since those emergency security measures were executed in July, Zcash has reclaimed its footing, tripled its price, and reached this week’s multi-billion-dollar valuation milestone.
