Traditional battery chargers force users to identify positive and negative terminals before connection, a step that becomes hazardous when terminal markings are faded or the battery sits in a cramped engine bay. CTEK Sweden AB, headquartered in Vikmanshyttan, Sweden, has addressed this with the CS One Gen 2, a charger that eliminates the guesswork entirely. Retailing at approximately £199 ($250 USD), the unit occupies a premium tier within a consumer market where entry-level 12-volt maintainers start below £20.
The device targets vehicle owners managing complex electrical architectures, classic automobiles, or varying battery chemistries. Its polarity-free terminal technology uses internal sensors that automatically detect polarity upon attachment, routing electrical current correctly regardless of which clamp is affixed to which post. This configuration eliminates spark hazards and reverse-polarity protection trips, addressing potential errors when servicing batteries in older vehicles.

Beyond terminal sensing, the CS One Gen 2 automatically diagnoses the connected battery’s internal chemistry, capacity, and state of health. The adaptive system identifies standard lead-acid variants—including flooded, Gel, Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB), and Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)—alongside 12-volt Lithium-ion (LiFePO4) chemistries, adjusting charge parameters without requiring manual setting selection on the hardware. In operational evaluations involving three batteries of differing physical sizes, capacities, and chemical compositions, the unit identified each unit’s requirements, applied the appropriate power delivery curves, and restored all three to a 100 percent state of charge within several hours.
CTEK omitted traditional physical buttons and display screens from the main body to simplify the hardware. Operation and telemetry monitoring are instead handled wirelessly through integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity via a dedicated smartphone application. Through the mobile app interface, users receive live charging data and automated push notifications upon task completion. The platform also gives manual access to specialized maintenance software cycles, including WAKE UP Mode and RECOND Mode.
WAKE UP Mode is designed to recover deeply discharged batteries, generating targeted voltage pulses to reset internal Battery Management System (BMS) low-voltage cut-offs on lithium units or initiate current flow into depleted lead-acid cells. RECOND Mode applies a reconditioning profile with controlled voltage phases to reduce acid stratification in flooded lead-acid batteries, helping restore cell capacity and extending service life. The shift toward higher-tier, adaptive chargers coincides with broader changes in automotive design. Modern vehicles equipped with stop-start systems, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), onboard telematics, and auxiliary 12-volt circuits in electric vehicles place higher cyclic demands on secondary batteries, accelerating parasitic drain during periods of extended inactivity and expanding the market for multi-chemistry maintainers.
