The Bargain EV Catch: How Citroën’s e-C3 Aircross Traded Floor Space for Huge Legroom

Battery placement, 5-seat layout, and cargo space in the budget EV crossover

Your knees sit high in the back of the e-C3 Aircross. The floor beneath your feet has been raised to accommodate the battery pack, and it alters the way you sit. The base of the rear bench feels elevated relative to the floor, and foot space under the front seats is restricted. This is the primary compromise of the electric model.

At 4,395mm long, the e-C3 Aircross is significantly bigger than many rivals. The Renault 4 measures 4,144mm, while the Vauxhall Frontera Electric stretches to 4,287mm. The Citroën is also 240mm longer than the car it replaced. This growth does not make it noticeably more arduous to park, and it helps the e-C3 Aircross become one of the roomier options at this price.

Rear passenger legroom is class-leading, according to Citroën. The combustion C3 Aircross offers a 7-seat layout, but the EV variant is strictly limited to 5 seats due to battery placement. Without a third row of seats to accommodate, the second row has moved further back, granting even more space to stretch out. The e-C3 Aircross features a 44 kWh LFP battery, which provides around 186 miles of WLTP range. The same Stellantis Smart Car platform underpins the Vauxhall Frontera.

Battery housing under the floor expands the physical footprint while footwell space contracts. The wheelbase spans 2,672mm, and the width is 1,850mm. Height stands at 1,660mm. “There are some cheaper-feeling elements inside the cabin of the e-C3 Aircross, but they’re mostly acceptable considering the low price,” said Alastair Crooks, senior news reporter. Entry pricing targets around £23,000 / €27,400 in the Europe/UK market, which anchors the material choices against a hard price tag.

Despite the raised floor, the boot holds a generous 460 litres. The second-row seat position and cargo floor are directly connected. Citroën quotes that figure with the seats in place. The rear bench splits 60/40, but there is no pass-through for longer items. The seats fold almost flat, forming a level platform with the false boot floor, opening up 1,600 litres of luggage space. That is far more than the total volume found in the back of a similarly configured Renault 4. Cargo capacity in the Frontera matches the Citroën at 1,600 litres maximum. Towing capacity is low in this electric model, and the rear bench lacks a full split.
