Liverpool Turn to Fulham After Atletico Comeback as Barcola Injury Scare Eases

Iraola assesses Barcola and Gakpo before Fulham fixture

LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool will return its attention to domestic duties ahead of the upcoming Premier League fixture against Fulham after a tactically demanding 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield. The European encounter showcased the Merseyside club’s offensive adaptability and squad depth amid minor fitness setbacks to key attackers.

The victory was secured five minutes into the second half, when Argentinian World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister converted the game-winning goal. Liverpool had first needed to recover from Atletico Madrid’s opener, scored by midfielder Marcos Llorente, before Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai equalized before the interval.

Andoni Iraola’s side maintained structural discipline and control during the comeback. The Liverpool manager is a Basque tactician known for a high-pressing, transition-heavy style developed during previous managerial stints at Rayo Vallecano and Bournemouth.

Bradley Barcola made his full debut on the right wing after joining Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain in a marquee £123 million transfer. The French winger delivered an energetic 60-minute shift, but he was withdrawn after showing signs of physical discomfort.

Gakpo’s absence had already forced a significant reshuffle of Liverpool’s frontline. The Dutch forward was omitted from the matchday squad against Atletico because of tightness in his hip adductor, and his availability for Fulham remains uncertain while the coaching staff prepares for final pre-match training sessions.

“Cody we will see,” Iraola added. “We will try today and see if he is ready for tomorrow or if we need to wait until the next one.”

Highly-rated academy prospect Rio Ngumoha started on the left wing with Barcola on the opposite flank. When Barcola came off at the hour mark, Iraola introduced Victor Munoz as his direct replacement, while Jeremie Frimpong—the explosive Dutch international acquired to bolster Liverpool’s wide options—entered for Ngumoha.

The changes moved Frimpong to the right-wing position, Munoz to the left and Swedish international striker Alexander Isak into the central focal point of the attack. Liverpool then saw out the final half-hour of the European tie without conceding significant momentum to Diego Simeone’s Atletico side.

Iraola downplayed concerns about a potential long-term injury for Barcola, attributing the summer signing’s early exit to fatigue rather than structural damage. “Barcola was just cramps,” Iraola said, outlining the team’s immediate training schedule. “We have to evaluate how he is today, but there is no injury. I think he should be available if everything goes normal.”

The tactical variations provide Iraola with critical selection options as Liverpool manages a congested multi-competition calendar. Liverpool’s coaching and medical staff will conduct physical evaluations during the afternoon training session to determine whether both Barcola and Gakpo can feature in the squad against Fulham, or if further squad rotation will be required to maintain their domestic momentum.
