Real Madrid Locks Down Courtois Through 2028 After Injury Comeback

Real Madrid has reached an agreement on a contract extension with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois that will keep the Belgian international at the Santiago Bernabéu through June 2028, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano and reporting from Madrid Voice. Courtois, who joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in August 2018 for a reported fee of £35 million ($45 million), has made 338 appearances for the club in all competitions. Before moving to the Bernabéu, Courtois began his senior career at Belgian club Genk, winning the Pro League in 2011 before signing with Chelsea. He spent three seasons on loan at Atlético Madrid between 2011 and 2014, winning the Europa League, the Copa del Rey, and the La Liga title, before returning to Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

The agreement adds an additional year to Courtois’ previous deal, which was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2026–27 campaign. The reported agreement follows Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in their opening UEFA Champions League group stage match, a contest in which the 32-year-old goalkeeper started and played the full 90 minutes. During his six-year tenure in Madrid, Courtois has won every major club honor available, including three La Liga titles (2019–20, 2021–22, and 2023–24), the 2022–23 Copa del Rey, two Supercopa de España trophies, and the FIFA Club World Cup. At the international level, Courtois has earned 102 caps for Belgium and won the Golden Glove award as the tournament’s top goalkeeper at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Courtois also rebounded from significant knee injuries during the 2023–24 season. After suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee in August 2023 and a subsequent torn internal meniscus in his right knee in March 2024, he returned to action in May 2024. He was named Player of the Match in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final after recording nine saves in a 1-0 win over Liverpool at the Stade de France, setting a tournament record for saves in a final. The move is part of a broader roster retention campaign by the reigning Spanish and European champions, who have moved aggressively to secure their core players on long-term contracts.

Real Madrid recently finalized a contract renewal for forward Vinícius Júnior, while attacking midfielder Arda Güler has committed to a long-term agreement running through 2032. Club executives are also in ongoing negotiations regarding an extension for England midfielder Jude Bellingham. Courtois has previously stated publicly that he hopes to conclude his professional career at Real Madrid. While the club has not yet designated a future long-term successor in the position, the extension ensures stability in goal through the 2027–28 season. He subsequently started and kept a clean sheet in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League final at Wembley Stadium.
