Scrubs & Beyond Shuts Down More Than 100 U.S. Stores

Scrubs & Beyond has begun winding down its entire physical retail footprint across the United States. The company is the country’s largest brick-and-mortar provider of healthcare apparel and nursing uniforms.

The chain’s retreat comes as healthcare professionals increasingly shift purchases to direct-to-consumer digital channels and e-commerce platforms. Digital-native brands including FIGS and Jaanuu have helped drive that change, while hospital systems have negotiated enterprise supply agreements directly with apparel providers.

A banner on Scrubs & Beyond’s e-commerce platform announced the decision to consumers with the message, “All Retail Stores Closing.” More than 100 outlets across 30 states are affected, and going-out-of-business sales have begun at numerous locations. Current liquidation discounts range from 20% to 40% off total merchandise.

The retailer was founded in 1997 by Rick and Holly Boland. For more than two decades, Scrubs & Beyond expanded through suburban strip centers and shopping malls, later strengthening its position in 2013 by acquiring the major regional rivals Life Uniform and Uniform City.

Its inventory included well-known third-party medical uniform labels, along with the company’s proprietary Beyond Scrubs line, which it developed and distributed. The physical retail model is now under sustained economic pressure from rising brick-and-mortar operating costs, commercial lease obligations, and post-pandemic changes in shopping habits.

Scrubs & Beyond is operated by Kindthread, an apparel company based in Scottsdale, Arizona, and backed by private equity firm Ames Watson. Kindthread acquired and re-launched the brand and retail chain in 2022 during a strategic portfolio reorganization intended to consolidate specialized uniform providers.

Kindthread’s broader corporate ecosystem has included the long-standing healthcare and hospitality apparel brands Landau, Chefwear, and White Swan Uniforms. The company has not issued a public statement detailed enough to confirm how many retail employees are affected by the closures, and it has not provided a firm calendar date for completion of all store liquidations.
