Mac Allister Reveals Liverpool Contract Offer Withheld Ahead of Atletico Madrid Clash

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister said he has not been offered a new contract by the club, speaking before the Champions League group-stage match against Atletico Madrid. Mac Allister described the situation as leaving him “very, very sad.”

Mac Allister arrived at Anfield from Brighton & Hove Albion in June 2023 under a five-year contract worth an initial £35 million, rising to £55 million with add-ons, securing him through June 2028. Liverpool have moved to hand fresh terms to teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, while Mac Allister said his camp was told no offer is on the table.

“There was a chance (I could leave in the summer) as everyone knows,” Mac Allister said. “I received the news the club had made a decision not to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.” Mac Allister added, “Everybody can see I give 100 per cent for this club every single day in training. I have good games and bad games like everyone and I always give my best.”

Under Fenway Sports Group CEO of Football Michael Edwards and Sporting Director Richard Hughes, Liverpool have operated under strict wage-structure protocols while navigating high-stakes contract negotiations for senior leaders Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Mac Allister referenced Gravenberch and Szoboszlai receiving renewed terms while his camp was bypassed.

“I see Dominik (Szoboszlai) and Ryan (Gravenberch) renewing their contracts and that makes me happy as they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad as I didn’t get mine,” Mac Allister said. “But there is still time.” Mac Allister said, “The fans don’t need to worry as I will give 100 per cent until the last day I am here. We will see what happens.”

Mac Allister is a core starter in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa América title-winning campaigns, drawing consistent monitoring from major continental clubs including Real Madrid. He said, “There were options to leave this summer and right now, I’m in the right club and I have the right mindset to give 100 per cent to this club.” He added, “It will depend on how I perform this year. It’s (the club’s) right to make a decision. But fans don’t need to worry as I’ll give 100% and maybe they change their minds (the club).”

Mac Allister did not posture, agitate, or attempt to force a move. He stressed his commitment to Liverpool. Mac Allister is into the final two years of his current deal. Liverpool’s Champions League and domestic season continue with the contract tension unresolved. Arne Slot’s side faces Atletico Madrid with Mac Allister available for selection.
