Inside Man United’s Midfield Overhaul: Bellingham Tracked, Then Bypassed

Manchester United’s football operations staff extensively monitored Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham during the summer, according to reports from recruitment outlets, before club executives ultimately selected an alternative group of transfer targets to rebuild the central midfield. Rather than pursuing a deal for the 20-year-old Englishman, United’s leadership pivoted to complete moves for Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, and Chelsea’s Andrey Santos.

The impetus behind United’s aggressive midfield recruitment stemmed from sudden departures and fitness setbacks in the squad. Following the exit of veteran Brazilian international Casemiro and a major knee injury suffered by Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte, England international Kobbie Mainoo was left as the club’s only fully fit, established central option. The sudden lack of depth forced United’s staff to evaluate several profiles across Europe to ensure immediate stability and long-term depth.

Bellingham emerged on United’s radar following a rapid rise through the English football pyramid. A product of the Birmingham City youth academy—the same development pipeline that produced his elder brother, Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham—Jobe made his senior debut for the Blues as a 16-year-old in January 2022. After spending his formative senior season at St. Andrew’s, he completed a move to Sunderland in July 2023.

The multi-player acquisition strategy was designed to completely refresh a central unit that faced significant structural changes ahead of the new campaign. Bellingham became an integral starter for the Wearside club, culminating in a Championship playoff final victory during the 2024–25 season that earned the Black Cats promotion to the Premier League. Rather than remaining in the English top flight with Sunderland, Bellingham opted to move abroad last summer, signing a long-term contract with Borussia Dortmund.

Physically dominant and versatile, Bellingham functions primarily as a box-to-box central midfielder with the capacity to drop into a deeper defensive holding role. After initially filling a rotational role at Signal Iduna Park, the 6-foot-3 midfielder established himself as a regular starter during the second half of the campaign under manager Nico Kovac. His contributions helped Dortmund secure a second-place finish in the Bundesliga and qualify for the UEFA Champions League, and he has retained his starting place in the opening matches of the current domestic season.

Known for his defensive work rate and long-range passing distribution, he remains under contract with Dortmund through 2030, with market valuations by Transfermarkt placing his current transfer value around £34 million ($44 million). With five years remaining on his deal, the German club holds a strong leverage position regarding his future. Bellingham’s domestic and European performances have also placed him on the international radar. England national team head coach Thomas Tuchel is actively monitoring the midfielder’s development at Dortmund as a potential option for upcoming international fixtures.
