Honda Bets on India and Japan as U.S. EV Market Collapses

The 0 Alpha heads to Indian and Japanese markets while U.S. dealers face an empty EV showroom.

Honda will unveil the 0 Alpha electric crossover on December 2, 2026, bypassing North America entirely. The Japanese automaker is routing its next battery-electric vehicle straight into India and domestic showrooms, a strategic pivot that leaves its U.S. dealership network without a single mass-market EV to sell following the Prologue’s discontinuation.

Prototypes wearing heavy camouflage have been running laps in both Japan and India for months. Test mules are enduring extreme heat and monsoon downpours near the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, where Honda plans to build the production model. Engineers are pushing the boxy chassis hard. The abruptly chopped rear end, first shown at the October 2025 Japan Mobility Show, survives mostly intact on the test vehicles. It cuts drag.

No battery capacity figures exist yet. Motor output, charging architecture, and pricing remain locked inside Honda’s engineering centers.

The U.S. exit was not an accident. When the $7,500 federal tax credit evaporated in September 2025, American EV demand cratered. Honda had already scrapped three separate electric projects earlier this year, including a planned Acura model. The Prologue, built on General Motors’ Ultium platform, lasted barely two years on dealer lots before the plug was pulled. Relying on GM hardware proved to be a dead end.

Instead of chasing a shrinking American buyer pool, Honda is fast-tracking hybrid powertrains domestically. The next-generation CR-V hybrid is moving up the production calendar. Toyota executed this exact playbook last year by restricting the North American RAV4 exclusively to hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. Hyundai followed suit, leaning heavily into internal combustion hybrids to offset stalled EV adoption rates.

Honda executives previously floated the idea of extracting technology from the 0 Alpha to engineer a cheaper EV specifically for American buyers. That timeline is now indefinite. The 0 Alpha will instead slot into a growing Japanese lineup alongside the Super-One and Insight EV when it hits the market in December.
