BMW X5 Sales Soar 23% as Q7 Slips: What Drives the Gap?

Third-quarter sales show X5 widening its lead over the redesigned Q7

The third-quarter sales tally released Thursday puts a fresh edge on a rivalry that has lasted two decades in the U.S.: the BMW X5 is sprinting ahead of the Audi Q7, while the Bavarian brand sits on track to keep its seven-year run as America’s top luxury seller.

For the first nine months of 2026, BMW delivered 63,767 X5s, up 22.9 percent from 51,870 through the same period in 2025. Audi moved 13,754 Q7s, down 4 percent from 14,257. That 50,000-unit margin means roughly 4.6 BMWs sold for every single Audi.

The X5 is the most important single model in BMW’s U.S. lineup, and its momentum is what carries the brand. Audi’s best-seller this year is the Q5, with 33,509 units through September — a model that is smaller and priced below both of these rivals.

What accounts for the divergence? The outgoing Q7 was comfortable, quiet, and finished with an upscale interior, but its powertrain choices were narrower and its styling arrived without the visual punch that has kept the X5 in showrooms. BMW, meanwhile, broadened its X5 options with mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and hydrogen variants, letting buyers in different markets pick the configuration their dealers can actually support.

Demand for the X5 is not just about preference; it is about availability. The new fifth-generation X5, revealed in June, adopts the Neue Klasse design language first seen on the iX3, with a wide full-width display beneath the windshield, hexagonal touch controls, and a steering wheel layout that departs from convention. Audi’s redesigned Q7, also shown in June, is less polarizing, keeps three rows of seating, adds power-operated opening and closing doors, and offers a V8 rated at 591 horsepower alongside V6 engines.

Both marques are now racing to translate that redesign into showroom orders. Whether the refreshed Q7 can reclaim share against the X5 will only become visible over the coming year, as dealer stock turns and new-generation models reach customers.
