Real Madrid Enter Talks for €130M-Rated Yan Diomande, Shifting Transfer Race Away from Liverpool and PSG
Real Madrid have opened direct negotiations with RB Leipzig for teenage winger Yan Diomande, fundamentally altering a high-stakes transfer pursuit that previously saw Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain competing for the Ivory Coast international.
The 19-year-old forward, who has made Madrid his preferred destination, is currently valued by Leipzig at approximately €130 million. That valuation presents a significant barrier for earlier suitors, including Liverpool, whose opening approach valued near €100 million (£86.8m) fell short of the German club’s financial expectations. Leipzig managing director of sport Marcel Schafer publicly insisted that the club plans for Diomande to remain in Germany next season, backed by a contract that runs through 2030.
If completed at Leipzig’s full valuation, the transfer would establish a new benchmark for the German outfit. A deal at that level would exceed the €90 million fee Manchester City paid for defender Josko Gvardiol in 2023 and the €76.5 million plus add-ons deal that sent striker Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United in 2025. Leipzig’s structural position remains enviable: having secured the player on a long-term commitment, they face no institutional urgency to sell without receiving a landmark proposal.
Real Madrid’s strategic push for Diomande is motivated by potential changes in their attacking rotation. The Spanish champions are exploring right-sided options in the event Brahim Diaz departs this summer, despite the Moroccan international’s preference to stay and ongoing support from head coach Jose Mourinho. Madrid’s movement on Diomande continues an aggressive window under Mourinho, who has already secured Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Marc Cucurella, while remaining active in efforts to recruit Rodri.
Diomande’s trajectory represents one of the quickest developments in recent European football. Barely 18 months ago, the winger was training at DME Sports Academy in Florida before moving to Spanish side Leganes. After making his senior debut against Real Madrid following under 500 minutes of professional action, Leipzig moved quickly to acquire his signature last year.
His production in Germany justified that fast track. Diomande delivered 12 goals and nine assists across 33 Bundesliga matches last season, helping Leipzig secure a third-place finish and Champions League qualification. Underlying metrics highlight why elite clubs are competing for his signature: no player in the German top flight logged more overall dribble attempts last term, and Diomande posted the highest take-on success rate among wingers across top European leagues with at least 50 take-on attempts. He also established himself internationally, playing in four World Cup matches for Ivory Coast before their last-32 exit against Norway.
For Liverpool, Madrid’s direct involvement introduces a familiar challenge in elite market recruitment. With Leipzig unwilling to accept bids below their top-tier valuation and PSG maintaining interest alongside Madrid, Liverpool must decide whether to match an escalating price tag or pivot away from one of the continent’s most productive young wingers.
