Chelsea Agree £52m Deal to Sign Crystal Palace Defender Maxence Lacroix
Chelsea have struck a £52 million agreement with Crystal Palace for the permanent transfer of French centre-back Maxence Lacroix, securing a major defensive reinforcement ahead of the new campaign.
The 26-year-old defender will undergo his medical before signing a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge through 2032, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The lengthy deal aligns with the structural roster planning favored by Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo, which has routinely tied key signings to extended contracts since taking control of the club in 2022.
Standing 6-foot-4, Lacroix built a reputation as one of English football’s most commanding aerial and recovery defenders after arriving at Selhurst Park from German side VfL Wolfsburg in 2024. His blend of raw speed and physical presence allows him to operate comfortably in high-line defensive schemes or within a low block.
Data tracked by Opta Sports highlights his output last season, where he finished as the only central defender in the top flight to log at least 50 tackles won (60), 200 duels won (204), and 250 clearances (252).
The arrival of Lacroix gives manager Xabi Alonso a highly versatile operator capable of anchoring either a back three or a traditional four-man defence. His signature comes as Chelsea look to rectify defensive issues that have dogged the squad across recent campaigns. In the 2023-24 season, Chelsea surrendered 63 Premier League goals—their highest tally conceded in a 38-game league format—and 74 across all competitions. Defensive inconsistencies continued last term, with the team allowing 52 Premier League goals despite claiming the Club World Cup title.
The Blues have moved aggressively in the transfer market to fix those core deficiencies. Lacroix represents Chelsea’s second notable defensive addition of the summer window, joining Italian full-back Marco Palestra, who arrived earlier from Serie A side Atalanta.
