Mirae Asset Consulting Acquires Controlling Stake in South Korean Crypto Exchange Korbit

The trading platform assures users that asset protection and daily operations remain unaffected by the ownership transition.

Mirae Asset Consulting has finalized its acquisition of a controlling stake in Korbit, officially becoming the largest shareholder of one of South Korea’s pioneering cryptocurrency exchanges. Following the transition, Korbit assured its users that trading services and customer asset protection protocols will continue operating without disruption.

The ownership shift marks a significant corporate realignment for Korbit, which is recognized as one of the country’s prominent digital asset platforms. In a statement addressing the acquisition, the exchange emphasized that the change in its shareholding structure would not impact daily operations, reassuring clients that both fiat and digital asset holdings remain fully secured under existing safety frameworks.

Founded in 2013, Korbit holds a historic position in the South Korean blockchain ecosystem as the nation’s first cryptocurrency exchange. Over the past decade, the platform has navigated a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape overseen by the Financial Services Commission (FSC). South Korea enforces some of the world’s strictest compliance mandates for digital asset service providers, requiring exchanges to maintain partnerships with local commercial banks to provide real-name verified accounts for fiat-to-crypto trading.

The entry of Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of the prominent financial conglomerate Mirae Asset Financial Group, underscores the growing intersection between traditional finance and the digital asset sector in East Asia. Mirae Asset has progressively expanded its footprint in blockchain and Web3 technologies, aligning with broader institutional trends where established financial institutions seek direct exposure to virtual asset infrastructure.

This acquisition comes at a time of heightened scrutiny for South Korean exchanges. Under the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information, local platforms must adhere to rigorous anti-money laundering (AML) protocols and secure information security management system (ISMS) certifications. By integrating with a major financial entity like Mirae Asset, Korbit could potentially strengthen its institutional credibility and compliance capabilities in an increasingly competitive market.
