How the Global Oil Market is Quietly Erasing Iran’s Chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz
New pipeline networks and overland routes are set to permanently insulate Middle East oil exports from maritime conflict.
The geopolitical struggle for control over the world’s most critical energy chokepoint has triggered a massive, permanent realignment of global energy logistics. Despite intensive military efforts, the U.S. and its allies have failed to break Iran’s chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, forcing oil-producing nations and global markets to rapidly construct land-based bypasses that could soon render the contested waterway obsolete.
A week of daily bombardments by the U.S. military has failed to establish a secure alternative corridor. Shipping data reveals a stark reality: on a recent Friday, not a single commercial vessel or “shadow fleet” tanker utilized the U.S.-backed route. Meanwhile, Iran’s designated channel recorded seven successful transits. Marine radio broadcasts from U.S. forces asserting they are “prepared to maintain freedom of navigation and safeguard lawful commerce” have been met with open skepticism and hostility from seafarers on the ground.
The maritime crisis escalated dramatically following an Iranian attack that killed an Indian sailor, prompting New Delhi to bar all Indian crew members from transiting the strait. Concurrently, the head of the Japan Foreign Trade Council declared the waterway a strict no-go zone for commercial shipping while hostilities persist.
Historically, the U.S. Energy Information Administration has classified the strait as the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint. Prior to the outbreak of the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran in late February, approximately 20 million barrels of oil flowed through the passage daily. The sudden closure of the route sparked the largest oil shock in history, but the global market has proven surprisingly resilient by finding immediate work-arounds.
Shippers have increasingly turned to “dark” transits, turning off transponders to slip through undetected, while nations have heavily drawn down their emergency oil stockpiles. More significantly, land-based infrastructure has rapidly scaled up. Saudi Arabia has maximized the use of its East-West pipeline, while the United Arab Emirates has redirected flows through its Habshan-Fujairah pipeline. Both Gulf states are also utilizing rail corridors to move crude away from the conflict zone.
Further north, Iraq has resorted to overland trucking, sending thousands of tankers across the border to Syrian ports on the Mediterranean. This emergency corridor has turned Syria into a major transit hub, now handling more than a quarter of Middle East oil volumes, up from zero just months ago. Kuwait is also in active negotiations with Saudi Arabia and the UAE to secure access to their pipeline networks, aiming to move its own crude out of the Persian Gulf without risking maritime transport.
This temporary pivot is rapidly hardening into permanent infrastructure. According to energy intelligence firm Kpler, the UAE has fast-tracked the construction of a new West-East pipeline, which is already 50% complete and expected to be operational early next year. Saudi Arabia is also expanding the capacity of its own overland routes.
In the Levant, a consortium including Chevron is exploring the rehabilitation of the historic pipeline connecting Kirkuk in northern Iraq to the Syrian Mediterranean port of Baniyas, which has been inactive since it was damaged during the Iraq War two decades ago. Additionally, Turkey has proposed a major southern extension of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline to connect directly with the Iraqi port of Basra, establishing a secure Mediterranean export route.
According to an analysis by Goldman Sachs, these rapid infrastructure developments will fundamentally alter global energy geopolitics. The investment bank estimates that newly added pipeline capacity will protect over 45% of pre-war Gulf oil exports by the end of next year. By the end of 2028, this figure is projected to surpass 60%, with an accelerated development scenario potentially shielding up to 75% of exports from Persian Gulf disruptions. Goldman Sachs analysts noted that while the median construction time for regional pipelines is typically 2.5 years, builders historically move at a much faster pace when responding to severe supply disruptions.
