MoonPay Launches PayBox Payment Vault for AI Agents in ChatGPT and Claude
The embedded vault uses multi-party computation and biometric passkeys to let autonomous AI agents execute crypto and card transactions.
Artificial intelligence assistants are moving from providing research to executing direct financial transactions inside conversational interfaces. Payments infrastructure company MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault integrated into Claude and ChatGPT that enables autonomous software agents to process retail purchases, book travel, and execute decentralized finance transactions.
While AI models have previously been capable of planning itineraries and finding products, users were required to leave the chat window and complete transactions manually on merchant websites. PayBox removes this friction by allowing AI agents to stage transactions directly within the conversation. Users then verify and authorize payments using biometric passkeys, such as Face ID on their mobile devices, before any funds transfer takes place.
“The card hid the cash. The phone hid the card. This is the era where money disappears into conversation,” said MoonPay Chief Executive Officer Ivan Soto-Wright, adding that billions of incoming AI agents will require dedicated rails to hold, move, and spend funds safely.
Initial integrations available at launch include flight reservations, restaurant bookings, and retail purchases across major e-commerce platforms. For web3 applications, users can perform cross-chain asset bridges, token swaps, and deploy funds into decentralized protocols such as Aave.
The backend security infrastructure is driven by Sodot, an Israeli cryptographic key management firm acquired by MoonPay in April 2026 in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $100 million. Sodot currently secures over $50 billion in assets and 10 million wallets for institutional clients including BitGo and eToro.
To protect user credentials, wallet private keys are split using Multi-Party Computation (MPC) across hardware-isolated Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). This distributed cryptographic architecture ensures that no single party—including MoonPay, the host platform, or the AI agent itself—ever holds a complete private key or can unilaterally sign transactions.
Card-based payments are routed through Visa‘s agentic commerce protocol, enabling the AI agent to complete checkouts without ever obtaining raw payment card numbers. On the blockchain side, PayBox supports Solana alongside seven Ethereum-compatible networks, including Ethereum mainnet, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo, and Robinhood Chain.
The platform also incorporates x402, an open payment standard originally created by Coinbase and transferred to the Linux Foundation, which receives backing from Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, AWS, and Anthropic.
The launch completes a series of technological developments by MoonPay throughout 2026, following its March release of an open agent wallet standard backed by PayPal, the Ethereum Foundation, and the Solana Foundation, a May ChatGPT crypto checkout integration that relied on web redirects, and a June desktop application linking Claude and Codex directly to crypto wallets.
