Google Prepares Global Expansion for Android Age Verification API

Google is expanding its new system designed to help Android app developers manage user age verification requirements, scheduling regional launches in Australia and Canada for mid-August prior to a worldwide rollout expected before the end of the year. The platform, officially designated as the Google Play Age Signals API, is currently in active testing in Brazil.

Rather than asking users to disclose an exact birthdate or submit government-issued identification, the tool allows parents to share age categories as a range for themselves or their children. Configured through the Google Family Link app, the system automatically transmits these generalized age signals to any installed application utilizing the API, prompting software to present age-tailored experiences.

The move comes as technology companies face an escalating wave of regulatory mandates governing youth safety online. Parliaments globally and several U.S. states have introduced laws shifting compliance burdens onto software marketplaces and app creators, requiring them to limit minors' access to inappropriate material and restrict invasive data practices.

By centralizing age assurance at the operating system level, the framework addresses long-standing privacy concerns associated with age verification. Traditional methods often require third-party identity checks, facial scanning, or payment card verification—methods that privacy advocates and regulators, including the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, have scrutinized for potentially over-collecting sensitive personal data.

Under Google's implementation, software creators retain complete autonomy over how they respond to the age signal, keeping control over feature modifications, content filtering, and safety parameters within their applications.
