Seagate Accelerates 50TB Hard Drive Timeline as AI Hyperscalers Book Capacity Through 2028

data center demand fueled by generative artificial intelligence and agentic workflows has sparked an unprecedented backlog in high-capacity storage, prompting Seagate to commit the majority of its nearline exabyte output well into 2028. The manufacturer revealed during its fourth-quarter fiscal year 2026 earnings report that rapid adoption by cloud providers is simultaneously accelerating its technical roadmap toward 50-terabyte-plus hard disk drives.
Seagate posted $3.6 billion in revenue for the quarter ending June, representing a 17% sequential increase and a 48% surge compared to the same period last year. Executive leadership highlighted that continuous data logging required for AI model context has turned cold storage into a foundational pillar for large-scale deployments.
To expand total storage density without requiring unsustainable capital expenditure on manufacturing facilities, Seagate relies on increasing per-platter areal density. This strategy relies on Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording technology, which uses a localized heat source to temporarily alter platter media properties, enabling narrower data tracks without magnetic instability.
The company’s current enterprise architecture, the Mozaic 4+ platform, supports individual hard drive capacities reaching up to 44TB. According to Chief Financial Officer Gianluca Romano, Mozaic 4+ drives are expected to account for 50% of Seagate’s HAMR exabyte shipments to select customer accounts by the end of calendar year 2026.
Development is already transitioning to the third-generation Mozaic 5+ platform, designed to achieve areal densities exceeding 5TB per platter. Incorporating ten of these next-generation disks within a single drive chassis will enable unit capacities of 50TB and above. Chief Executive Officer Dave Mosley confirmed that initial 50TB Mozaic 5+ evaluation units will ship to enterprise cloud clients and OEM partners for validation and qualification testing in late 2027.
