Sonos Schedules September Event as Chief Executive Outlines AI Strategy for Smart Home Audio

Chief Executive Thomas Conrad outlines a hardware-first strategy ahead of the autumn showcase.

Sonos is preparing to unveil new products in September, setting up a key showcase as the audio company attempts to bounce back from recent corporate struggles.

The plan was highlighted during the company’s third-quarter financial results presentation, following initial coverage by media reporter Janko Roettgers in the Lowpass newsletter. Chief Executive Thomas Conrad, who took leadership officially roughly one year ago after a brief interim period, indicated that AI will serve as a foundational pillar for the company’s future lineup.

Addressing investors, Conrad emphasized that long-term success in smart home audio will not be determined merely by which tech firm builds the fastest or largest model. Rather, he argued that competitive value lies in the surrounding hardware infrastructure and physical presence within living spaces.

“The lasting value is going to be in what surrounds the model in a real home, the hardware that can converse with quality across every room, the system that already knows the shape of a home and the way a family lives in it, the connectivity to reach the speakers, services and devices that turn a request into coordinated action,” Conrad said, highlighting two decades of whole-home network development by Sonos.

Throughout its history, Sonos established a reputation for platform neutrality, allowing users to connect devices to diverse voice assistants rather than constraining them to a single proprietary ecosystem. This approach allowed the manufacturer to position itself above lower-cost hardware alternatives offered by rivals like Amazon and Google, which have similarly pushed generative features into home devices.

The upcoming September announcement comes during a critical recovery period. Sonos has maintained a relatively low profile on hardware releases while managing customer dissatisfaction and internal disruption caused by an ill-fated 2024 mobile app overhaul. That redesign sparked widespread backlash, prompting executive turnover and head-count reductions across the organization.

Transitioning into AI-driven smart home experiences represents a defining challenge for Conrad and the company as they attempt to reclaim momentum in the premium home audio sector.
