Ocoopa Recalls 1.5 Million Hand Warmers Over Fire Risks After Fatal California Incident

A fatal incident in California and hundreds of reported burn injuries have prompted a nationwide recall of approximately 1.5 million rechargeable hand warmers distributed by Ocoopa Direct, safety regulators announced.

The alert, issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), warns that internal lithium-ion batteries inside the devices are prone to overheating and catching fire. Federal authorities linked the defect to the death of an 83-year-old San Diego consumer in February, along with 350 reported burn injuries and 15 structure or localized fires.

In total, Ocoopa Direct has logged 1,480 reports of the heating devices severely overheating.

The recall impacts several model lines, specifically model numbers UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, H01, and H01(PD). Marketed in various color configurations and patterns, the affected products feature a dual-sided design where two individual units attach magnetically and share a single charging cable.

Lithium-ion battery failures of this nature typically occur when internal short circuits trigger thermal runaway, generating intense heat that can rupture the housing and ignite surrounding materials. Because damaged lithium cells pose severe risks during waste processing, regulators explicitly advised consumers against discarding these devices in standard household trash, municipal recycling, or standard retail battery drop boxes.

The recalled hand warmers were distributed across major e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, Walmart, and Ocoopa’s direct online storefront between September 2018 and May 2026, retailing for prices ranging from $15 to $60.

Consumers currently possessing any of the listed models are urged to discontinue their use immediately. Ocoopa Direct is offering full refunds, issued either to the original form of payment or as a digital company gift card upon request.
