MoonPay Launches PayBox to Enable Crypto Transactions in ChatGPT and Claude

The new security vault uses multi-party computation and the open x402 protocol to let AI agents execute decentralized transactions safely.

Users can now direct popular artificial intelligence assistants to execute cryptocurrency purchases, asset swaps, and cross-chain transfers directly from conversational interfaces, following the launch of PayBox by crypto infrastructure provider MoonPay.

The new payment vault connects popular Large Language Model interfaces like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude directly to user wallets and traditional financial rails. By interpreting plain-language commands, the system allows AI models to structure complex decentralized finance (DeFi) transactions, bridge tokens across disparate blockchain networks, and trigger automated trades.

To resolve the security dilemmas inherent in giving software agents control over financial assets, PayBox relies on a dual-layer cryptographic architecture combining multi-party computation (MPC) and hardware-based trusted execution environments (TEEs). Cryptographic keys remain fragmented across segregated environments, ensuring neither MoonPay nor the underlying AI models can access user funds independently. Transactions can either require manual validation via biometric passkeys or run autonomously within custom spending limits set by account holders.

Beyond conversational consumer apps, MoonPay is releasing a software development kit to let external software engineers embed the payment vault into proprietary autonomous agents. Payment support extends across traditional methods—including debit cards, bank transfers, Apple Pay, and PayPal—alongside native multi-blockchain infrastructure.

PayBox also integrates support for x402, an open payment protocol engineered to facilitate automated micro-payments across internet services. Originally designed by Coinbase, governance of x402 was transferred to the Linux Foundation in April 2026 to convert the framework into a vendor-neutral web standard for machine-to-machine commerce.

Institutional adoption of agentic payment rails has accelerated rapidly in recent months. Amazon Web Services embedded x402 into its Bedrock AgentCore Payments architecture, while institutional custody provider Fireblocks rolled out an x402-compliant framework and joined the protocol’s governing foundation. Coinbase expanded the tooling suite in June, introducing capabilities that allow AI agents to receive USD Coin (USDC), navigate service marketplaces, and settle high-frequency micro-transactions.

Data published by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis on June 3 revealed that automated agent transactions on Coinbase’s Layer-2 Base network surpassed 100 million within roughly nine months of deployment. While early protocol throughput was largely driven by speculative activity, recent metrics indicate sustained operational usage, with x402 public dashboard data logging more than 12.7 million transactions across participating networks over the past 30 days.
